Best general walk around lens for MFT cameras

The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 is a great general purpose, walk around lens to have on your micro four thirds camera. It's 40mm equivalent field of view to a full frame sensor makes it the perfect sweet spot between a 35mm and a standard 50mm, while the fast 1.7 aperture allows for faster shutter speeds in low light conditions, and offers a nice bokeh. Being a pancake lens design, it barely adds any length to the Cabrera body making it ideal to keep in your pocket or purse, or for discreet use in street photography. All in all, it's an excellent lens that produces sharp images and offers a great value, rivalled only by the 25mm f/1.7, which adds almost double the barrel length to the lens. If you're looking for a good, all day, walk around lens sand do not need the ability to zoom in to your ...

  • Top critical review

Oh for still pictures, not for video

This is a nice compact fast lens in the normal range for viewing angle. As such it is very useful, and worth keeping permanently mounted, on a smaller camera body. It's probably the fastest MFT lens out there for under $200. The disadvantages? Loud, when focusing. Sounds like a copy machine or scanner, and takes about as long. So, it's no good for video unless you have external sound recording.

  • This 20mm pancake lens is very sharp, f1.7 - 16, light, and only 1" tall!

As a mature 35mm film guy my transition to digital was very slow and painful. From a bunch of 35mm Nikon bodies and lenses to a couple of digital point and shoot cameras I finally wanted to get to a camera with detachable lenses--but I did not want a backpack full of lenses, bodies, flash devices and other assorted accessories, I wanted small and light. I found the right trade-off in a Lumix G-2 four-thirds format camera. It came with 14-42 and 45-200 zooms and I bought the Oly 36R flash. I decided I wanted one short and light lens, fixed focal length, reminiscent of my old Nikkor 45mm f2.8 GN pancake lens which served as a mounted standard carry around lens. The Lumix G 20mm f1.7 was exactly what I wanted. It is light, 3.5 oz, short, 1" length, f1.7 to 16, equivalent to a 40mm lens ...

  • A unique lens for lightweight camera gear

Its image quality is stellar, it’s sharp even wide open, a top-notch optical instrument for environmental portraits and decent for street photography (It’s no speed demon but it is perfectly acceptable}. It performs very well in low light conditions and with the 3/4 format it gives you the freedom of light camera gear even for assignment work on the street. This is a lens that can make all of the difference in the world. I combine it with the 14mm, also a great lens The Panasonic Lumix 20mm might not be the new uprising in the camera world, but its a great lens at a reasonable price.

  • Image quality, versatily in a small factor

Moving from an EOS system, this replaced the 24mm STM, so it is my most direct comparison I like the field of view, slightly more narrow, feels more natural for some reason. Full aperture kinda gives the same dof and of course you can use a faster shutter speed. Good sharpness The rumors are true, it is indeed "slow" with focusing, particularly in low light. But it's nothing particularly bothersome, I can live with it. Also using it in an olympus system and haven't experienced the infamous banding problem.
