About this product

Product Information

Do you remember the best summer of your life New York City, 1945. Marjorie Jacobson and her best friend, Marty Garrett, arrive fresh from the Kappa house at the University of Iowa hoping to find summer positions as shopgirls. Turned away from the top department stores, they miraculously find jobs as pages at Tiffany & Co., becoming the first women to ever work on the sales floor-a diamond-filled day job replete with Tiffany blue shirtwaist dresses from Bonwit Teller's-and the envy of all their friends. Hart takes us back to the magical time when she and Marty rubbed elbows with the rich and famous; pinched pennies to eat at the Automat; experienced nightlife at La Martinique; and danced away their weekends with dashing midshipmen. Between being dazzled by Judy Garland's honeymoon visit to Tiffany, celebrating VJ Day in Times Square, and mingling with Café society, she fell in love, learned unforgettable lessons, made important decisions that would change her future, and created the remarkable memories she now shares with all of us.

The (Tiffany) company should put this book on prominent display, for heaven's sake—it's that much of a paean., The (Tiffany) company should put this book on prominent display, for heaven's sake--it's that much of a paean., What do you imagine might be the most memorable summer of your life? Do you think it's happened yet?|9780061189524|, Hart's infectious vivacity resonates with a madcap immediacy, delectably capturing the city's heady vibrancy and a young girl's guileless enchantment., This warm account of more innocent times makes an unspoken comparison with the way we live now. A fond backwardglance., The (Tiffany) company should put this book on prominent display, for heaven's sake-it's that much of a paean., This book offers insights into the women who lived through World War II. It's a perfect Mother's Day gift., Hart writes about that stylish summer with verve, recollecting with a touching purity a magical summer in Manhattan.

  • It was the best summer of their lives.

Have read thousands of books and this is probably the most purely enjoyable one. Simply a warm, fascinating tale of 2 sorority sisters from the University of Iowa coming up with the incongruous idea of traveling to NYC ( it took over 2 days ) and finding jobs for the summer of 1945. Having experienced all their at best marginal plans for employment failing and literally running out of money, in desperation they traipse 5th Avenue cold calling at every retail door. Having struck out and at the end of their rope they find themselves at the mystical front doors of Tiffany. Naive beyond description and totally unaware females have never worked on the Tiffany sales floor - in they march, and, after being passed uphill from one amused manager to another and eventually to Mr. Tiffany himself - ...

  • Summer at Tiffany is a breath of fresh air

This has to be one of my favorite books of all time. I loved getting to know the characters in the book and then seeing the pictures in the middle of the book. I also enjoyed the innocence and excitement she relayed through her experiences. I received the book on Christmas morning and finished the book before I went to bed that night. This book is perfect for all ages - I'm 32 and adored this book.

  • Summer at Tiffany was fantastic!

This book was great, I remember hearing about it a couple years ago. I am a student in my last year at University of Iowa and live down the street from the Kappa Kappa Gamma house where the girls' came from. I thought this book was such a great story kept it to have my mom read it since she would enjoy reading about a time period before her own. Definitely recommended!

  • Thank you
