In East Berlin in 1984, the secret police, known as the Stasi, are gaining more and more control, spying on German citizens, and recruiting thousands of them to spy on each other. Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) has been ordered to find something on playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), so he sets up a surveillance room and listens closely as Dreyman, his actress girlfriend, Christa-Marie Sieland (Martina Gedeck), and various suspected radical friends gather in their apartment. But when Wiesler discovers that culture minister Bruno Hempf (Thomas Thieme) cast suspicion on Dreyman only so he can have his way with Sieland, the master interrogator and torture teacher starts taking a long look at just what it all is about. THE LIVES OF OTHERS, cowritten and directed by first-timer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, is a tense, compelling thriller about a critical time in German history. Mühe is mesmerizing as the complicated Wiesler, a loyal soldier until he learns too much. The wildly talented Koch is outstanding as Dreyman, a man with a lot to say but desperate to avoid the same fate as his mentor, theater director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert). Inspired by actual events and real characters, THE LIVES OF OTHERS was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. Interestingly, during and after the filming of the movie, several of the actors (including Mühe) found out that they or their families had been victims of the Stasi--and in one case, the father of an actor (Charly Hubner) was revealed to have been a member of the Stasi himself.

Terrific Cold War movie about E. German Stasi spying on citizens
If you enjoy history and the Cold War in particular, this movie, although subtitled in English, a wonderful movie that is about redemption and truth. You won't be disappointed. Is one of the best Cold War movies about pre-unification E. Germany and how corrupt and despicable they were.

I was there, December 1989 on vacation in France. I was about 35 years young. On a lark I rented a car and DROVE from Paris to Berlin.GREAT autobahn. I liked that the movie portrayed very much what I "felt" when "going across" to East Germany (the wall was basically still there but Checkpoint Charlie allowed entry/exit). I liked the fact it gave the impression of quiet and real oppression, classic Orwellian/1984 in real time. I rented a driver (former youth Nazi, then about 60) who drove us over to "see". People's expressions in East Germany were so. . blank. Buildings all grey, grey,. Then, our driver took us to a set of walk-up apartment buildings. We followed him up to his "cousins" TINY little room. Our driver opened it up and invited us to have a look around, stark, bare, lifeless. ... I was there, December 1989 on vacation in France. Then, at my request, we went to a "regular" bakery. There was a line of about ten people. Inside everyone seemed to be the walking dead. Two crummy loaves of tiny bread left. Depressing, unbelievable/sad. Not enough food. Then we went to a sort of "hardware store". I bought a "hammer" and chisel to take home a piece of the wall. Went to the EASTERN side of the wall and I got out and went to chip off a piece. Very colorful graffitti. A shadow came over me and I looked up to see two tall, blond, blue eyed East German wall guards just looking at me. From their eyes I had the impression I was just a "bug" to them. They conversed with each other very low-key as they held their assault rifles relaxed but READY. I had the impression they were talking about me. I had my 8mm camera going anyway so I tried to point it up at their faces (my arms were down. I felt like a thief with chunks of wall in my hands and around me. They spoke with each other as if I wasn't there. Really scary/creepy. Oh, at the "tenement" building our driver pointed out ONE lone old fashioned telephone booth outside. No phones inside apartments. The booth had CAMERAS pointing at it and big lights pointing at it. Made one feel like everything/everyone was being watched. This movie really is great and a keeper; however, as good as it is (and it's great) it only scratches the surface of the deep destruction of the human beings (shadows of human beings) the G.D.R., made of people. Meister Eckhart rolled in his grave I'm sure. A Good follow-up book is STASILAND if u want to get a feel for survivors stories of the so-called GDR. I was there and glad I went. Great soup in Germany. The people all seem to carry around a sort of "weight" though. All is polite, however, there is a deep "angst" reflected in people. Had no idea Germany is so green and at night, the beautiful absolutely perfectly kept homes were gorgeous. Some had candles in their windows. I really liked Germany. Haven't been back since. Hope all is improved and healing there. That's all folks, Andy in Maine
