About this product

Product Information

After the successful independent features about Chinese-American life DIM SUM and EAT A BOWL OF TEA, director Wayne Wang took on the daunting task of adapting Amy Tan's sprawling, multigenerational best-seller THE JOY LUCK CLUB. After her mother's death, June (Ming-Na Wen) is asked to take her place in a mahjong club. The three other members, like her mother, were all born in China before the 1949 revolution. When June learns that she has two half sisters in China, she plans a trip to meet them. With this catalyst, the women begin to tell stories, not just about but their own mothers and their lives in China, but also about their often strained relationships with their Americanized daughters. The flashbacks to China are dramatic, and the stories are heartbreaking. As the film progresses, June learns about a culture that's supposedly her own but that she can touch only through the commonality of the mother-daughter bond. It is this nexus that makes the movie work. There are multiple points of view, but they are always connected by the universal desire for one generation of women to pass on their hopes for a better life to their daughters. This feeling, without being cloying or overly sentimental, underlines the emotional tales in this moving, well-acted, and beautifully staged drama.

  • Excellent Asian-American Story

I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't know exactly what to expect when my girlfriend told me I should try to get this movie on Ebay. She had seen the movie about 10 years ago, and she thought I would like it. She's an Asian-American, and although I had never really thought of buying any Asian plot based movies before going out with her, she got me to watch excellent films such as Memoirs of a Geisha and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, so I trusted her judgment when she said that I would like The Joy Luck Club. The movie far exceeded any expectations I had foreseen, it's an absolutely wonderful story about Chinese women who had struggled in China and after they have come to America have struggles with their Chinese-American daughters. The story is sad but exceptional. One of the ...

  • The joy luck club in its own is a wonderful story!

The story goes between four of the women in the Joy luck club, and then among their 4 children. Its very detailed and must be watched carfully! its an awesome story of female power, and how even with the most diffcult background, you can over come who you were, and become who you want to be! This is a MUST-SEE movie!

  • The Joy Luck Club

A wonderful woman's film (especially for Asian-American women). The movie deals with various gender, family and relationship issues concerning women who deal with the ever present hyphen in what it is to be an ___-American female. I enjoyed this film immensely and would highly recommend it.

  • Excellent

I saw the comercial for this movie on another movie and decided to find it. I love a movie that teaches the ways of another culuture and makes me sad to see the young people let them go and don't believe in them anymore. Very good movie

  • Interesting Movie

I met Amy Tan, the author of The Joy Luck Club, and wanted to see the movie. It is quite an interesting study in human behavior. I appreciated it even more after hearing Ms. Tan describe her relationship with her mother. Parts of this are true and others are fiction, according to the author.
