Shusterman is no stranger to pushing boundaries. Scythe owes an obvious debt to Unwind (2007) and its sequels, and this succeeds as a sort of shadow companion to Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking trilogy: instead of exploring the ways in which men are monsters, this deals in what happens to men when there are no monsters. When our reach does not exceed our grasp, when comfort is more easily obtained than struggle, when our essential humanity doesn't burn out but becomes slowly irrelevant, what becomes of us? Readers will find many things in these pages. Answers to such unsettling questions will not be among them., Elegant and elegiac, brooding but imbued with gallows humor, Shusterman's dark tale thrusts realistic, likeable teens into a surreal situation and raises deep philosophic questions. A thoughtful and thrilling story of life, death, and meaning.

    Synopsis
A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021) Two teens must learn the "art of killing" in this Printz Honor-winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology. A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life--and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe--a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award-winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price., Two teens must learn the "art of killing" in this Printz Honor-winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology. • Death in a world that has no natural death. Excellent read.

Both my husband and I love this book series. We had never heard of the author before and weren't sure about it. Promoted as a teen book, it really is excellent for teens and adults (my restriction is that younger children might find it too disturbing). Extremely well written and compelling. Quite a different story and I think, very thought provoking. This particular copy, I am giving to a friend to enjoy. We have bought the full series. The 3rd and possibly the final book on just came out. It is about death in a world where natural death no longer occurs and how that is made to happen. If that intrigues you, I think you may very well enjoy this book--which is stand alone or you can buy the series. We enjoyed it so much that we have now purchaced more books from this author to read ...

      • Bought the wrong type of book

I did not realize that I bought an e book. This is for my daughter to bring to summer camp because its her high school summer reading book. She's not allowed to bring any electronics to camp so she can not even use this electronic version. I had to go out and buy the actual book.

There was a few stickers on the front, from a pay it forward book thing. Taking off the stickers, which took up most of the cover, did tear off a bit of the cover. But isy not that noticeable, otherwise there is on light wear and tear.

This was a Barnes and Noble YA book club edition. Didn't anticipate having a sticker on the book but it was still very good condition. Only small blemishes.

      • Not New

Bought this book advertised as new. It is not. The dust jacket shows considerable wear and there is a marker mark on the book its self. As a collector of books this is pretty disappointing.
