I am very happy with this purchase. I thought the price was reasonable considering it had to be shipped half way round the world and the item arrived at my door without hassle in about 4 weeks. The item was well packaged and arrived in good condition. The DVD played perfectly on my 20 year old Panasonic player. I rate this seller A+ and look forward to future purchases from this seller of items you can't buy in Australia.

China in the midst of civil discord and a soiled woman is redeemed.

Film was generally well made and still entertaining for modern audiences. Good black and white photography and atmosphere of early 1930's engaging. Marlene Dietrich stands out and Anna Mae Wong was fine in her scenes. A pity we didn't see more of her. Plot a little ragged at ending. A historical narrative tries to be a love story for its ending. That said, it was definitely worth watching.

  • Masterclass in photography.

For me, the treat is photography. And von sternberg was a master of photography. Set design, lighting, film cutting, these also make for visual delights in this movie. As on French director once said about watching movies, "I turn down the volume and just watch the images." As Orson Wells once said, "Anyone can make a good film; just look around. But a GREAT FILM...." This movie is great, photographically. The script is good. It entertains.

  • Loving the classics!

Marlene Dietrich at her best! However, I had to purchase this DVD as it's the biggest film the Anna Mae Wong made. Truly the first, famous Asian artist to come from Hollywood's golden era. It's a shame the studio and laws at the time didn't provide more opportunities for stardom to ethnic actors. She's amazing!
