Works well in linux Mint 18.3
The auto light adjustment is really good. The image quality is a little bit blocky at highest resolution. The sound quality for recording is good enough. The auto focus is nice to have. I recommend it without having reviewed other camera's of it's class. Much better than the $2.00 cams from china.

works as expected and the price is right
I had been looking for a low-priced web cam for some time when I ran across this listing and decided to take a chance on it. I did not need a cam with a microphone, so the lack of a mic was not a problem. It worked right out of the box, but there was no software that came with it, so I downloaded the installation software from the HP website and installed that. The installation software gives me a lot more camera options. As far as I can tell, it works O.K. I did not try it with Skype, but I used it with Gmail chat and it worked fine with the Gmail software. The person on the other end was able to see me. The clip doesn't work on my monitor because of the beveled monitor edge, so I set it atop a book next the screen and it works from there. The base folds flat so it can be set atop flat ... A Good Inexpensive Web Camera
I bought this camera to use with a Raspberry Pi as streaming web camera. It is not as good as the Logitech C910 I've been told but it provides excellent video in 1280x720 as well as various other formats including 960x544 which I use to reduce bandwidth. I have also found its ability to see at night with just s few streetlights to be very good. Overall I would recommend this as an inexpensive camera for setting up a webcam. I should also note that it is supported as a UVC device in Linux and can be controlled, including the focus, using the standard Linux tools.I bought this camera to use with a Raspberry Pi as streaming web camera. I bought the product as a makeshift security camera to replace my ps3 eye camera. the picture is crisper than most security camera sets even at night using only street lights and having it focus through a windows. I like that i can use the clip to hold to a stand or just use the clip as a stand itself. There is a light on the camera that can actually act as a night vision style light in the dark (have tested and confirmed depending on recording style) The biggest thing i dont like is its HP not Logitech (logitech fanboy). this is the first HD webcam i have owned and even tho its HP i am thinking of buying more to have setup through out my residence as a security system.
