Roma, 11 luglio 1855. Antonio De Felici, cappellaio, reo di avere attentato alla vita del segretario di Stato cardinale Giacomo Antonelli, viene giustiziato. Roma, 21 settembre 1861. Cesare Lucatelli, facchino, accusato dell'omicidio di un gendarme durante gli scontri fra i pontifici e la folla il 29 giugno, festa di San Pietro e Paolo, viene giustiziato. Fra le due esecuzioni, fra un popolo e un governo che non ha più autorità su questa terra, il disfacimento dello Stato Pontificio, la fine del potere temporale del papa, l'Unità d'Italia e una città che attende di conoscere il suo destino. Messa troppo spesso in ombra da vicende che già allora occuparono le prime pagine dei giornali italiani ed europei - una su tutte, l'impresa dei Mille di Garibaldi - la storia romana, della città e dello Stato Romano, alla metà dell'Ottocento, dopo la gloriosa quanto breve avventura della Repubblica mazziniana, è poco conosciuta dal grande pubblico.
