I remember seeing this series on television when it first aired. I had the entire series on VHS tapes, which are years old (and are now going to Good Will) When I saw the price had finally lowered on the DVD format I was so pleased. The DVDs are so nice to have, these have not been remastered and the sound and video is the same as when it aired. The description does say they have subtitles, but I couldn't locate it on the DVD menu, and after some research found out that older shows were actually closed captioned, (I do not know the difference) and that this will only work on older DVD players. I've seen these a hundred times. When the local PBS station dropped them, I was glad I had recorded them onto VHS, but the copies were pretty ropey. Now, I've got the Series One DVD set - wonderful, all over again. Series One is by far the best; I think they went downhill later on. Besides having all the books as well, my wife and I went over to the UK and went to virtually every place in the series - even the little stream that crosses the road, and the bridge in the opening - wonderful! We had a farm for 30 years and had a vet that was the embodiment of Sigfried Farnon. Everything about the show and the surgery was replicated at his house - right down to the ledger book - the boots, a sloshing bucket of soapy water in his truck - a wonderful man and a wonderful vet - not like the ...
