Must-own Crimson
'Red' is a must-own King Crimson cd. I had already known about 'Red'...I even owned it as a record in my youth, before I bought it on cd. 'Red' was the swan song to the Crimson line-up founding and only remaining original member Robert Fripp put together in 1972. 'Red' was the last in the trilogy of releases this line-up put out. Each record was different than the last. 'Lark's Tongue in Aspic' was the first. It had six tracks, three instumentals and three with vocals. The songs with vocals had obvious structure and the instrumentals seemed to sway from structure to improvisation but never in a sloppy or wandering way. 'Starless and Bible Black' was the second record this line Crimson put out. From the opening track, "the Great Deceiver," it sounded as if the improvisation would ... This song would veer from seemingly out of control jamming to then be reined in for John Wetton's vocal parts. Anyway, listen to it and you will understand. 'Starless' has 4 songs with vocals and 4 instumentals. Finally 'Red' was released in 1974. 5 tracks: 3 with vocals and 2 instrumentals. 40 minutes of music but you will never look at your watch. All five tracks are engaging. Members of the band Tool refer to this album as an inspiration to them and after listening to this cd, you can hear how this cd has influenced them. King Crimson's sound was building to this release. There were bursts of power in the musicianship in the songs on 'Larks' Tongue' and more so in the songs on 'Starless' and that power exploded on 'Red' Wetton's bass playing and Bill Bruford's drumming formed the bedrock to all five songs. There are some quiet parts to 'Providence.' There are not many quiet moments in Fripp's guitar playing. His playing is very much like a rock god's. This is more a heavy metal album than a progressive rock album. All five songs: Red, Fallen Angel, One More Red Nightmare, Providence and Starless are terrific. As with older music that is put out on cd, as it gets re-released with the then state of art technology it sounds better. This release sounds better than when this album was put on cd for the first time in the late 80's/early 90's. No warnings of hiss from transferring analog recordings to digital. If you are new to King Crimson and need a jumping in point, you could do worse than 'Red.' This is a five star release but know that there are no bonus tracks and no booklet with pictures, lyrics or text.
