About this product

Product Information

First time in paperback, with a new foreword by activist and author John Robbins and a reader's group study guide. This groundbreaking work, voted one of the top ten books of 2010 by VegNews Magazine, offers an absorbing look at why and how humans can so wholeheartedly devote ourselves to certain animals and then allow others to suffer needlessly, especially those slaughtered for our consumption. Social psychologist Melanie Joy explores the many ways we numb ourselves and disconnect from our natural empathy for farmed animals. She coins the term "carnism" to describe the belief system that has conditioned us to eat certain animals and not others. In Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows Joy investigates factory farming, exposing how cruelly the animals are treated, the hazards that meatpacking workers face, and the environmental impact of raising 10 billion animals for food each year. Controversial and challenging, this book will change the way you think about food forever.

Reviews
"I think Gandhi would have loved Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows . For this is a book that can change the way you think and change the way you live. It will lead you from denial to awareness, from passivity to action, and from resignation to hope." --John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution, "An absorbing examination of why humans feel affection and compassion for certain animals but are callous to the suffering of others." -- Publishers Weekly, "A thoughtful book full of substance and style. It should be required reading for anyone interested in what we eat and why." --Kathy Freston, author of the New York Times bestselling Veganist and Quantum Wellness, "An altogether remarkable book that could transform the way society feels about eating animals." --Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of The Face on Your Plate

  • Compassion and kindness should be extended to all animals and beings

Compelling information about the physical, environmental and emotional cost of slaughtering billions of animals worldwide for human foods. The industry HIDES the bloody horror so we do not SEE it and empathise with the animals treated as profitable dirt. Humans ARE caring and conscious beings, we love our families and PETS and are emotional when anything bad happens to them. MILK is meant for babies of all animals, we are not meant to consume milk of anything but our own species. TRY a 30 day dairy-free or vegan challenge and see for yourself how you feel. We are natural vegetarians but consume cadavers, and the milk of them, out of unconscious (and unhealthy) habit...r

  • A MUST READ

I bought this, so that I could show people who are on the fence about becoming a vegetarian a reason why they should. This book is great for anyone who wants to open their minds up to the realities of eating meat. It's a great book, because it shows how brainwashed society is. Anyone who dislikes this, probably has a bias against vegetarians and just doesn't want to admit the truth about meat.

  • Absolutely the best book available on this subject, recommend to everyone!

As a vegan with a meat eating boyfriend, this book really got him to think about why he actually does love his dog, but still eats other animals. This book is very straight forward and just lays the facts out for you to do what you will with them. I recommend this book to absolutely everyone! I couldn't find a better book that explores the ideas of "carnism" that anyone could read and understand.
