Great unit - great price.
Very good price point for a rock solid GPS. If you want to load topographical maps onto the unit you will require a Windows XP PC to install the Topo software, as this software is unusable on Windows 10. Also, if the GPS unit is not running firmware 5.43 or above, you cannot connect the serial cable to the unit. However, the work-around is to put the SDCARD in a card reader and copy the maps directly onto it. This will require you to put the GPS serial number into the Topo software.Very good price point for a rock solid GPS. The Magellan Meridian Gold GPS is an excellent choice for someone who is looking for a GPS unit that is both dependable and easy to operate. Lately alot of people have chosen to go with the newer more popular color units, but I have been very happy with the Meridian Gold and can't see any reason to pay the additional cost of a color unit. Even though the Meridian Gold is no longer being offered by Magellan, there is still alot of new ones for sale on e-bay and other places so finding a good one is not a problem. When using the Meridian Gold in conjunction with a hand held compass,(as I highly reccomend doing because a person should never rely solely on one nevigational source)you will not have any problem navigating to your destination. The viewing screen on the Meridian Gold is large and easy to read. The keyboard is well marked and easy to operate. There is a large list of display options and multiple navigationl screens to choose from. Battery life is excellent on the Meridian Gold, it takes two AA batteries and lasts for up to 14 hours. I have had no problems with the Meridian Gold being able to lock in on satelites quickly, even in remote places. Storing waypoints and routes is easy and retrieving information from the unit is no problem. The unit is simple to operate, even for the beginner, there is really no way you can push the wrong button and get yourself so deep into trouble that you can't get back out; You can always push the escape button, this will return you to the previous screen. There are many accessories available for mounting the unit, such as a bracket for mounting to bicycle handle bars or a window or dash mount for your car or boat, and accessory cables for using your cars lighter socket for supplying power to the unit preserving your batteries while driving. There is a large list of available software that can be loaded into the unit, everything from 3d topo to detailed street maps. The unit comes equipped with a basic street map and uses SD chip to store any additional maps you choose. Loading map information onto an SD chip is fairly quick and easy to do. I primarily use my unit for woods travel, using regular topo software. Having a topo map available, I am able to quickly find the most promising areas to hunt, this has greatly improved my success while hunting. After seeing what I am able to do with my Meridian Gold, my hunting partners have purchased one of their own. I started using GPS for hunting elk many years ago, I am on my fourth unit now and feel the Meridian Gold is my best to date.

Good basic hand held, accurate GPS
Nice hand held GPS. I bought the GPS used and got the PC cable and cigarette lighter cable so I can download maps and use it mobile. I also purchased the mobile and bicycle mounts. This is a basic unit with a bit more accuracy than comparable brands, but the battery life is less. It generally picks up all available satellites at maximum signal strength and even when it doesn't the accuracy is not affected. An optional SD card can be used with the unit, but try and find any information on the capacity. These units were made and sold when 64MB was the largest available card. I have not experimented to see if it will read a full 512 Mb or higher card. Maps software is available which greatly enhances the very basic preloaded maps. I know some people with other brands and those do not track as accurately as this one. I gave it a good rating due to the lack of good pre loaded topo maps. Had Magellan not been too cheap to include good maps this would be an excellent rating.

We already have two just like this except that they are in the colored version. The unit can be a bit complicated to work but keep at it and you will master it. We never did find a website or customer service that could assist us with questions so we ended up asking a GARMIN user. He was very helpful so apparently the units are similar. Watch what you pay and what you are paying for!! The most updated firmwear that we have found is 5.40 version. There are units out there that are terribly out of date (even though they say they just got it, "new in box, just opened and looked at it"). Make sure you get the PC cable to go with the unit. Without that cable you are going to have to buy one to do updates. What they don't tell you: once you get the unit you still have to get an SD card and ... By the way, unless the listing includes MapSend you have to buy that seperate also. Watch ebay listings for this too. We bought our SD cards locally. Since MapSend searchs all like addresses for all cities requested we are going to load less visited states on a separate card so it's easier to find the addres you are looking for. Make sure you get the user manual with the unit. You can download what you need from the Magellan webiste but who wants to print out more than 100 pages. Overall, we are very happy with the unit. There are always drawback with any unit, with this unit we found the screen hard to read at night. Of course we liked the colored version better but the Gold is a very nice unit.

Tech support on the other hand is not good. Because this unit is a legacy unit they will not work on them any more, and you have to talk to people in some other country to get anything done. They don't even have a place on their web site to turn in a complaint and forget talking to an American about it. So overall the unit is good and has all the features needed to get you in and out of just about anywhere you would want to go, but because the support is not there and you cannot understand what those folks are saying I will be looking at different companies if I ever decide to buy another GPS Unit Gary F. ...
