About this product

Product Information

The story that inspired the major motion picture Beautiful Boy featuring Steve Carell and Timoth e Chalamet . This New York Times bestselling memoir of a young man's addiction to methamphetamine tells a raw, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful tale of the road from relapse to recovery. Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age eleven. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. In a voice that is raw and honest, Nic spares no detail in telling us the compelling, heartbreaking, and true story of his relapse and the road to recovery. As we watch Nic plunge into the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, he paints a picture for us of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It's a harrowing portrait--but not one without hope.

Reviews
Full of jaw-tightening and occasionally grisly scenes of shooting up, deals gone bad, guns and sex, Sheff's story takes off like a shot in the arm with a terse, honest and spontaneous narrative., "Tweakis...Bukowski and Burroughs, the heart to his dad's head -- and the kid can write." --Seattle Weekly, " Tweak is...Bukowski and Burroughs, the heart to his dad's head -- and the kid can write." -- Seattle Weekly, "Nic Sheff's wrenching tale is told with electrifying honesty and insight." -- Armistead Maupin, author of The Night Listener and Michael Tolliver Lives, "Nic Sheff's wrenching tale is told with electrifying honesty and insight." -- Armistead Maupin, author ofThe Night ListenerandMichael Tolliver Lives, Review of Tweak and Beautiful Boy : "Both takes on this story are riveting, brilliantly written, thoughtful, searingly honest and equally essential. They should be mandatory reading for every teenager and every parent of one.", The trajectory of drug addiction is nothing new, but Sheff's lucid, simple prose makes the heartbreaking journey seem fresh., A raw and sad account, vivid in its depiction of the pleasures and tunnel vision of addiction and the challenges of sobriety.

  • Good Book That Is Well Written In Fairly Honest First Person

TWEAK: Growing Up on Methamphetamines By: Nic Sheff This is a good book. Well written. If you want to read a fairly honest first person account of a young man with serious issues in Life, including a Meth addiction, then this is the book for you. It is sometimes hard to read and unless you are numb and without feeling as a human being you can not help but feel for Nic and hope that he will make it through treatment and come to terms with his issues and be healthy. I feel that he tends to blame others for his addiction at times (frequently) instead of accepting responsibility for himself but he gets there. I will admit that: I cried a couple times, I was frustrated that he would not accept help, I was disgusted at some of the things that he described (the abscessing if his arm). In summary ...

  • Excellent Read

I heard about this story on Oprah and became extremely curious and interested. It was definitely not a let-down and never have I been so consumed by a book. I really could not put it down. It is extremely real and open as the author describes his thoughts, feelings, and experiences as he goes through relapses and trying to stay clean. I would reccomend this book to not only drug addicts and family members of drug addicts, but anyone. If you look at Nic Sheff's story with a sense of compassion and aren't too judgemental, it will open your eyes to the struggles of others and give you a deeper understanding of their pain. It is rather graphic and disturbing at times but this is only because it is reality.

  • Excellent book

I've read the first book, beautiful boy and this book Tweak I'm just starting. I would recommend these books to any parent. They are absolutely an eye-opener and very important for parents of teens that are using drugs. It really gets to your heart and brings tears to your eyes. The best books I've read in a long time and they are true stories. Please buy them, it's a must..... Thanks alot. Becky

  • Tweak

This book is terrible! I read Nic Sheff's father's book, Beautiful Boy, and that was a great book. You can really sense how much he loves his son, so I thought I would enjoy getting to know him in Tweak. Not even close! I halfway think Nic is still on drugs writing this book. He jumps around so much and it just talks about him shooting up and having sex the whole time. I ended the book thinking he is this spoiled little brat who has an ego the size of San Francisco. Loser! Don't waste your time.
