    Great movie

Great movie that we hadn't seen in many years. Great starting images of 18 B-25s taking off. Lot of our generation's stars in their youths. A memorable movie (as was the book!) - many many versions now of a Catch-22!

  • Terrific "blast from the past!"

I recently re-read Heller's Catch 22 and wanted to watch Hollywood's interpretation of it. So I ordered it on DVD. It was a real hoot! Packed with rising stars from the 70s: Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, Richard Benjamin, Jon Voight and Anthony Perkins. Orson Welles also mails it in, but he's always fun to watch. And lots of fun cameos by other young (at the time) stars: Bob Newhart, Buck Henry and Martin Sheen. Some scenes from Heller's novel are faithfully rendered, others are overly drawn out, and yet others are under-explored (Like the relationship between Yosario and Captain Orr, perfectly played by the (oft seen but rarely recognized) actor Bob Balaban--you've seen him star in the movie 2010, the sequel to 2001: A Space Oddysey--remember the slightly cracked ...

  • Not bad, but the book is better!

Joseph Heller did a fine job of capturing the insanity of life and war from a nihilistic worldview in his novel "Catch 22". The book's complex story line and spastic, sardonic dialogue are a fresh change from mainstream writing. One need not be a nihilist (I am not) to enjoy the witty mis-adventures Capt. Yossarian and his squad mates. The characters' interaction to the war and each other really draw you in and make for long, involved reading sessions. That having been said, the book doesn't translate well to the silver screen. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if someone has not read the novel first, do not watch the movie. It would be quite confusing and much of the subtle humor would be missed in the first viewing. The all-star cast (including ...

  • A dark look at capitalism, war, and greed

A classic from the anti-war years of the seventies. Right up there with "M*A*S*H*", "Easy Rider", and "Go Tell The Spartans". Although more tongue-in-cheek than "Spartans", the hopelessness of its protagonist, Yossarian, and his attempts to prove his insanity to get out of flying more combat missions makes this a great example of the anti-establishment American cinema of the period. Also, the last great get-together of so many airworthy B-25's in one place. The takeoff scene with almost two-dozen classic bombers flying off to their targets is awesome!! (Check out Yossarian's salute at the flight line)!
