Wonderful Book on Lace Knitting with Musk Ox Yarn
For knitters, and for those interested in the Eskimo people, this is a fascinating book by Donna Druchunas. There is a long section on her experience visiting Oomingmak, a cooperative which markets the lace knitting of local people, with many wonderful photos of the finished work, local people, and local villages. This lace uses traditional designs and the extremely fine, warm wool of the musk ox, to produce stunning hoods, scarves and hats. She also visiting a local village and a musk ox farm. Then she offers 11 patterns to be knit in quiviut, the musk ox fiber, or other lace yarns. They can also be knit in fingering or sport weight yarns. I knitted the Fish Trap scarf in a sport weight yarn so I can testify to that. She gives clear instructions on how to knit these patterns, with many ... As a beginner with lace knitting, I am very fond of the book. The author has her reasoning which I agree and understand but I would have called the book "excellent" if it had some colour in it, not that it takes away from its quality. Shortly, I would happily recommend. An asset to lace knitters.
