Yoshi and Baby Mario are back in Yoshi's Island DS on the Nintendo DS. However, they aren't alone, as they brought along an array of other Nintendo babies with them. For the first time, this platformer game series lets players use Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Peach, and Baby Wario. Baby Bowser also makes a reappearance, although this time as a hero and not a villain. In Yoshi's Island DS, the evil Kamek is back, but this time he's not satisfied just capturing Baby Luigi. Instead, he wants to capture every baby in the entire Mushroom Kingdom. Our heroic babies must band together to put an end to the evil Kamek's plan in the 2D video game. This game title was developed by Artoon and published by Nintendo in 2006.Yoshi's Island DS is a sequel to earlier Yoshi Nintendo games in the Super Mario World series and includes some similar features. You'll play as a group of Yoshis with each Yoshi having the same abilities. Your primary method of attack is stomping on your enemies to defeat them. You can also swallow them and turn them into eggs. You can then use these eggs as weapons against your foes or to collect items in the environment. Each Yoshi can also flutter in the air for a limited time, gaining some altitude. Just like in the original game's version, when Yoshi takes a hit, the baby flies off his back. You only have a few seconds to get the baby back before it's game over.Each of the babies adds a new ability to Yoshi and his pals. Baby Mario gives Yoshi abilities that include ricocheting eggs and a dash feature. Special "M" blocks will also appear on a level with extra items inside each one. Mario can also grab Invincibility Stars. After catching this star, Mario can run through the level on his own, defeating all enemies in his path. Baby Peach lets Yoshi jump higher and float further, allowing the duo to reach a faraway platform. Baby Donkey Kong gives Yoshi the ability to swing on vines and ropes. The eggs Yoshi throws will also explode on contact. Wario lends his magnet to the dinosaur, which attracts all magnetic items towards the duo. Lastly, Baby Bowser lets Yoshi shoot fireballs at the expense of not being able to throw eggs. You'll find yourself frequently switching babies to find all the secrets in each game level. Yoshi's Island DS is full of collectibles. Finding all the collectibles will grant players access to a secret set of levels.Yoshi's Island DS for the Nintendo DS features the same classic Yoshi storybook graphics for Nintendo. However, the extra power of the Nintendo DS allows for more detail on each screen of the game. The island action spreads to both screens on the Nintendo DS, letting you see twice as much of the game at all times. Still a classic
Been wanting this game since I was 12. I recalled how exciting Yoshi's Island Advance for Gameboy was and I knew it was time. Each level is just as entertaining as I remember them plus the DS puts an added element of larger levels to explore. A true fan favorite game.

A faithful Sequel to one of the best of the 16bit era
Yoshi's Island doesn't mess with the original's formula and really just adds some new elements here and there. The new multiple baby element is really cool, but doesn't change the feel of the game at all. Basically, this game is for you if you liked the SNES original or Gameboy re-release. It's not going to surprise you in any way (if you've played the original) but it is a solid Nintendo platformer. Gameplay: 9/10 Pros: Classic Platforming of old. Playing one of the SNES's best games is always fun. New babies with different powers is a really cool new feature even though some work better than others. Cons: If you've played the original this really just feels like more of the same. It's great, but you've played it. The first boss is even the same (well 2 of them instead of 1). It could've ... It could've used some more touch features. Graphics: 8/10 Pros: Same cool morphing effects from the remake and original. Great art sense and pastel / cartoon feel. Cons: A lot of the graphics and animations are just ripped from the original (GBA or SNES, isn't DS stronger?), but what really bothers me is that the title screen and level progression menu is exactly the same. Sound/Music: 8/10 Pros: I love the Yoshi yelp and the baby crying really makes you feel anxious to get the baby back. Again, the sound and music will instantly feel familiar and is perfectly sufficient. Cons: Nothing new, perfectly sufficient but lacking something...pizzaz perhaps? Lasting Appeal: 7/10 Pros: If you missed out on owning a SNES or didn't buy the GBA remake then this is a must buy and you will absolutely love it, play it, beat it, and play it again. There are tons of levels and a lot of different worlds. The bosses especially stand out and were always excellent in this series, so you'll play through just to see and beat all of them. Cons: I'm not sure how much you'll care about finding all the flowers and collecting everything. I for one will not play it again after I beat it, though I may try to score high enough on a level here and there to unlock the bonus levels. Average: 80.00% Tilt: +/- 0.00% End Result is that Yoshi's Island DS is a solid Nintendo Platformer that will surely please anyone who played the original. It copies the original in so many ways and just doesn't offer enough to live up to the original, which after all is a classic and arguably one of the best platformers of the 16-bit era. We are in a different era where the bar has been raised and doing the more of the same isn't enough to warrant a must buy title. Verdict: 80%

SLIGHTLY changed game but still fun as ever
I loved the first yoshi's island game and saw that this one was released as well for the DS. Being a fan I bought it. The game plays just like it did in the SNES. If you played the previous one then you'll have no difficultly playing this one. Looking at the game it's not much different. Same cute art style and color pallet. The different babies make the game a little more enjoyable and the story has only altered slightly... and I do mean slightly. Luigi is captured again and you have to save him. Poor poor Luigi he's almost as bad as the princess. The good thing about the game is that it is just like the old one. The bad thing is IT'S JUST LIKE THE OLD ONE.
