Reviews
This fascinating, well-told autobiography is a complete refutation of the comfortable clich that 'man is master of his fate.' As far as pilots are concerned, fate (or death) is a hunter who is constantly in pursuit of them. . . . There is nothing depressing about Fate Is the Hunter. There is tension and suspense in it but there is great humor too. Happily, Gann never gets too technical for the layman to understand., This purely wonderful autobiographical volume is the best thing on flying and the meaning of flying that we have had since Antoine de Saint-Exupéry took us aloft on his winged prose in the late 1930s and early 1940s. . . . It is a splendid and many-faceted personal memoir that is not only one man's story but the story, in essence, of all men who fly., Few writers have ever drawn their readers so intimately into the shielded sanctum of the cockpit, and it is here that Mr. Gann is truly the artist., This fascinating, well-told autobiography is a complete refutation of the comfortable cliché that 'man is master of his fate.' Great stories from a commercial pilot in the early years of commercial flights.

  • If you love flight this has to be on your shelf!

This is probably my fifth or sixth copy of this book, purchased this time for a pilot who never read it. I have been a lifelong lover of flying, I go up whenever I can, hang a round airplanes and airfields and have done so all my life. This is, hands down, my favorite book on the subject, period. Gann chronicles his career as an airline pilot from the lean, mean thirties through the fifties, with a stint in the Air Transport Command during WWII. He is one of those authors that can create in your mind vivid images of the characters, scenes and events. And he clearly is all-consumed by a passion for the life of a pilot.

  • First-hand experiences from the Golden Age of piston airlne flying.

I read part of this book when I was about 12 years old, and read the whole book while in high school in the mid-1960's. Fifteen years later I was flying a "retired" C-47B in Alaska flying cargo (mostly fresh fish) and recommended it to my younger co-pilots. I picked up another copy and read it again before passing it on to one of the co-pilots. Gann captures the spirit of aviation during the 1930's to 1950's from an airline pilot's perspective. Having flown some of the same equipment, I have had moments where his description of procedures or situations mirrored my experiences. Even if you never intend to fly an airplane (or even ride in one) this book will open your mind to what it took for skilled pilots to overcome the limits of weather, equipment, and misfortune during the age when ...

  • Dangers before jet aircraft

As a military pilot with little prop time, this book brought home the perils of flying prior to the introduction of jet aircraft. Props were confined to the lower altitudes where most of the weather is. Jets often fly above the weather except for take off and landing, Very well written.
