  • Religion vs. The Great Alexandria Library

Interesting film of a relatively obscure historical event. Not commonly known to none-students of history, but this movie revolves around one of several times that the great library of Alexandria was destroyed - in this case by Christian zealots of the 4th Century. Rachel Weiss is outstanding in everything that she does, and this film is no exception. The staging, graphics and special effects are adequate to impart an accurate rendition of the period, though the subject matter, while faithfully rendered is depressing. Lately, some contemporary Muslims have taken the rap for a faith stomping on intellectual pursuit and enlightenment, but the Christians have certainly had their evil fanatical moments, and this is one of the more infamous... Well worth a view for historical entertainment ...

  • An Alternet View of how Christianity became a dominate player in the world.

This film tells the little-taught story of the end of the Roman Empire from the point of view of the Graeco-Egyptian-Roman culture that was Alexandria in the 5th century AD. The "minority" religions that were the Hebrews and the Christians, had and were claiming more and more "citizen rights", toppling what was once a thriving and vital culture, pagan though it may have been. Slight warning - These "Minority" religious folks are portrayed as unstable and rebel-rousing folk and not the kind, passive and loving folks the official literature makes them out to be. There were no Coliseums in civilized Egypt at the time and no official human sacrifices were made, either for worship or entertainment.

  • Gives the viewer the long lost story ofa brilliant mathematician.

An excellent film about a long forgotten woman mathemetician who made numerous discoveries but all was lost when she was put to death. It would take a thousand years before these answers would be rediscovered. Well done film.

  • Agora gets most of it right.

A good with about ancient history that gets a lot more Right than it does wrong That is rare with many films dealing with historical events and people. Ms Weisz is probably too young to have played Hypathia at this stage of her life, but she plays the role well and makes it interesting. This film was criminally overlooked in America and I recommend it for those with an interest in ancient Egypt and the lost library of Alexandria.
