Barbie and Skipper Dolls, Reporting the Fashion News
This is a review of an adorable story book called "Barbie in the Spotlight". It is part of the "Reporter Series" published by Golden Books. The story line in this book is unrealistic and just not that great. In this tale, Barbie is a TV news reporter who is scheduled to cover an important designer's fashion show. She takes her sister Skipper backstage to meet the designer and watch the interview. Barbie and Skipper avert a disaster when one of the fashion-show models gets stuck at the airport; Barbie steps in to model, while Skipper finishes the interview. If I were to rate the book's features separately, I would give the story line a 3 and the illustrations a 5. The photos in this book are really outstanding, and I just love them! They more than make up for the unremarkable story. The book is illustrated with fantastic color photogaphs of Barbie doll dioramas. Each scene was created using real Barbies and Barbie accessories. (Barbie collectors will recognize the "All Decked Out" and "Matinee Today" ensembles from the Barbie Millicent Roberts Collection, as well as some of the accessories from "Perfectly Suited", and a few Skipper Fashion Avenues, too. Shaving Fun Ken also makes an appearance.) Plus there are other items that don't look as if they were manufactured by Mattel. The scenes are quite creative and very detailed! I was amazed by them, which is why I purchased the book in the first place (I, um, don't even have any kids to read the story to! haha!) So I think that other Barbie collectors might also be interested in the book so they can enjoy the dioramas as well. The illustrations are realy outstanding. The original cover price of the book was $3.99 when I originally got my copy back in the late 1990's, and I thought it was well worth it. Lately I've seen it for sale online for less. If you're a Barbie fan and you can find a copy on ebay in decent condition, I think you'd probably enjoy owning it too.
