    Sure, there are other survival manuals out there, but this one is the textbook the United States Air Force Para-Jumpers use to learn their craft. These are the elite folks who perform Combat Search and Rescue! Pilots also use this as their primary survival reference. As you scan through this manual, you'll notice that it has a worldwide focus. Our pilots and those who rescue them must be prepared to survive and to operate in any climate, using only the items they have at the crash site and those they can find where they land. Ever wonder how to make a teepee using a parachute? What are the survival methods to purify water? What are the contents of standard USAF survival kits, and how are they to be used?     AFM 64-4

    This was recommended to my by an instructor of the USAF’s SERE School. This book is an excellent reference guide and starting point towards skills necessary to survive in both hostile and non hostile environments. I primarily wanted this guide for the skills outside of possible capture but even the text regarding what to do when captured could prove useful to civilians if ever in a hostage situation. Issued in 1964 and still used, because it works.
