At the time of its introduction into Semite, the F-111 was a revolutionary aircraft and was, without doubt, extremely popular. Capable of delivering a wide variety of ordnance, with a high degree of survivability, it was arguably one of the best tactical aircraft of its time. Initially, design requirements were groundbreaking, but as the parameters were etched onto the drawing boards, the reality of the difficulties of incorporating these prerequisites began to become evident. The proposal needed to meet the wants of both the Navy and the Air Force within a single, basic fighter design and this prospect, in reality, was never going to work. Nevertheless, through steadfast dedication by the Air Force, the F-111 eventually entered service. Furthermore, steely determination on the part of the manufacturer, as well as the test establishments, ensured problems were overcome, and the F-111 proved to be a resounding success. Illustrated-with over 170 colour photographs, many sourced from enthusiasts and private collections, this book covers the operational period of the F-111 Aardvark and EF-111A Raven, including their deployment during Operation Desert Storm. It includes details of all versions produced and the units that flew the aircraft operationally from the first, in the late 1960s, through to its eventual retirement by Australia in 2010. Also covered is the number of each variant produced, along with their unit assignments and details of colour schemes Including a host of special markings applied for events, anniversaries and retirements.
