About this product

Product Information

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's often adapted 1886 socially conscious horror novella, this version stars the incomparable John Barrymore as Dr. Henry Jekyll, a gentle, saintly Victorian physician. However, when the good Dr. Jekyll meets the diabolical Sir George Carew by chance one evening, Jekyll becomes fascinated by the dark side of the human psyche. Further goading his imagination is the sinfully seductive Miss Gina, who arouses more of Jekyll's nascent sexual and sociopathic longings. Determined to explore the dark side of consciousness without endangering himself, Jekyll concocts a potion that transforms him into Edward Hyde, an uninhibited rogue whom Barrymore brilliantly brings to life with the help of only artificial teeth and fingers. Soon, Jekyll finds that it is becoming harder and harder to separate his two personalities, sending him into a downward spiral that seems destined to end with the destruction of his former identity.

Dr. Henry Jekyll experiments with the scientific means of revealing the hidden dark side of man, and releases a murderer from within himself. This silent-era classic stars the incomparable John Barrymore in the title role. Comments: Historical Art, Love It! When watching this you can almost ''feel'' the history of movie-making. From Theatre to Pictures, To Color, to Present-day movies. The movie is from 1920 it says on the back, 96 minutes playing time. I have a couple other silent-movies from the 1920's, like Nosferatu for instance, i don't find them as good as this one. In this ...

    Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

    Being a fan of silent movies, I think this is one of the classics. It is an interesting story line. Barrymore's performance was wonderful - I though his portrayal of Mr. Hyde (along with the makeup) made that character very convincing. That he could play two completely different characters in the same movie is testament to his talent.
