Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johansson fight over the same rich young man in this sumptuously elegant and loose adaptation of Oscar Wilde's LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN. The setting for the action is moved from Victorian England's parlors to Italy's gorgeous Amalfi coast in the early 1930's. A vacationing American couple, the Windermeres (Johansson and Mark Umbers), meet scandal when caught up in a web of expatriate British slander after Mr. Windermere apparently starts having an affair with the notorious gold-digger, Mrs. Erlynne (Hunt). Meanwhile, the debauched Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore) takes it upon himself to comfort the tearful and lovely Mrs. Windermere, and Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson), an older member of the British circle, sees there's a sweet woman being hurt by all the malicious gossip and falls for Mrs. Erlynne himself. The gossip may be malicious, but no one writes it as well as Wilde, and here his famed quips--many flown in from other plays--flourish in wild abundance. Johansson is a knockout, and there are lots of elegant costumes and intricately decorated Italian villas, all captured in an enticingly dusky cinematographic style. Performances vary in stylistic approach, with Wilkinson carrying the day as the well-intentioned, self-effacing Tuppy, the vulnerable human center of this dizzying ring of barbed witticisms and elegant subterfuge.

    Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover

    This is the story of a much-maligned lady (Helen Hunt) who dates married men to avoid being hurt after a disastrous marriage. She gave up her one daughter (Scarlett Johansen) who has married well, featured in the posh magazine "Town & Country". The article of her daughter's marriage and their season in the Amalfi Coast of Italy gives our lady (Hunt) a goal. She sells her jewelry for a first class voyage to Italy where she meets the friends of her daughter's husband...eventually falling for one of them...adding a touch of romance and humor. The scenery of the Amalfi Coast and Italy itself is well worth watching this film. However, the plot has many twists which keep the viewer involved right until the last scene. I highly recommend this film...love conquers all....in Italy it ...

    Why remove most of Oscar Wilde's wit?

    I watched the movie because it said "based on a play by Oscar Wilde". There are a number of Oscar Wilde movie-plays (play-movies?) out that I truly enjoyed. Not this one. I liked neither Ms. Johansson nor Ms. Hunt in their roles; probably the casting, maybe the acting was bad. The story was not very credible either; often I could not understand the motives, worries, and problems that the characters supposedly had. And shouldn't there be at least a tiny little sexual tension between Mr. Windermore and Mrs. Erlynne or between Mrs. Windermore and the Lord who was after her, or at least some wit? And why on earth did Mrs. Windermore love Mr. Windermore and vice versa, something they were not tired of telling us? If the acting was bland, the script should have saved the movie, but it did not. ...

    Normally I Don't Buy DVDs

    I knew I had to buy this movie after I saw it on t.v. Love Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johannson in this beautifully costumed and scenic movie based on the play, Lady Windermere's Fan, by Oscar Wilde. Here's an example of the movie being better than the play script. Although different from the play, I actually like the movie better. Great date night movie or Girls' Night In choice. My friends who borrowed it loved it, too.
