Easy to install
PC is now twice as fast
Was able to upgrade from a single core AMD 3200+ to this 180 dual core. Easy to replace, and no new Windows XP install was necessary, however to get the dual core to be recognized, I had to update the BIOS via flashing it and update the chipset driver. Those were tough to track down until I found a legacy page at ASUS (the maker of my motherboard) and AMD's website, not to mention the .RAR zipped chipset driver which had to be uncompressed before installing. Took me an entire day to track all these different elements down and figure all this out, but well worth the effort! Needed a legacy XP machine to access archived files not accessible on Win7 on forward.

An upgrade that definitely worth the money spent.
Had an 7 Y old AMD Athlon 64 3500+, XPx86 based PC, 2x nVidia GeForce 6800GT (SLI), 1GB ram, ASUS A8N-SLI MoBo. All working. Decided to spend a little money to give it some more useful life and upgrade. So an AMD Opteron 180 (20$), +2GB ram (28$), +nVidia GeForce GT610 (45$), +Arctic Freezer 64 Pro (26$). OverClocked a little bit Opty 180(to 2580MHz-12x215), removed IHS (AS5 + Freezer 64 Pro, directly on chip), ram Dual-Channel DDR 3GB (2x1G+2x512M, CAS 3-4-4-8, 2x215=500MHz). New Win7-Pro x86 installation. Works perfect.Temps: Amb:23C, Idle: 38C, Stress-Linpack: 56C WEI CPU:5.7, Ram:5.7, GAero:4.9, GG:6.5, HDD:5.9 All speeds more than tripled. Under 120U$D gave a 2-3 year respectable life extension.
Great upgrade option to get dual core in a socket 939 motherboard.
I purchased this processor as an upgrade for my Compaq Presario sr1950nx desktop tower computer with the factory motherboard Asus A8N-LA, HP/Compaq name: Nagami2-GL8E, which is a socket 939. It was a drop-in upgrade as the computer booted up and functioned normally with the new Opteron 180. I did have to undo a software overclock that I had in place in Windows XP for the previous Athlon 64 in order to run stable. Both cores of the Opteron are utilized in Windows XP and the processor is running rock solid! I am sure that it is thanks to the dual cores and the double sized L2 cache (1 MB vs 512 KB of Athlon64) that the overall system responsiveness and Flash video playback are a bit better running this processor versus the original Athlon 64.
AMD Forever
Opteron's are a great substitute for most Athlon devices as long as your MOBO supports them. Price is very comparable and the performance is excellent.
