|CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is Steven Spielberg's extraordinary film about a man named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who becomes obsessed with meeting extraterrestrials after encountering a UFO on an abandoned road one night. Against the wishes of his wife (Teri Garr) and children, Neary, along with another witness to the sighting (Melinda Dillon), travels to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Director François Truffaut costars as Claude Lacombe, one of the organizers of the project. Spielberg hoped to follow up the huge success of JAWS with a low-budget film that would be an easy shoot, but, thanks in part to the complicated special effects, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS quickly snowballed into being an expensive endeavor but a commercial and artistic success. No one who has seen the film has ever looked at a plate of mashed potatotes the same way again.|

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (DVD, 2001)
This was one of my all-time favorite movies. Sure, it was science fiction, but it is real! Everybody expects this story to one day play out for real. After "Jaws", Steven Spielberg, hit another home-run with this film. The special effects, the lighting, and sound were all great, and the entire movie experience was terrific. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is a lineman for the power company, and all of a sudden the lights go out and everybody starts seeing UFO's, including Roy! The experience has indelibly printed some sort of message on his brain and he is powerless to resist it. In trying to tell people what he saw, everybody thinks that he is nuts. He loses his job, and his wife (Teri Garr) takes the kids and leaves him. Roy meets another person (Melinda Dillon) who has also seen these UFO's, and her son, Barry, who is only four, has been abducted by them. Together they are being drawn to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Once there, they see exactly what has been drawing them. The space ships land and hundreds of people from many years before are disembarked, including Barry. In turn, Roy is one of a select group invited to be taken aboard the ship for some sort of exploration. Thus, the close encounter continues. I found this film to be artistically beautiful, and thoroughly entertaining. If you have never seen it, you are missing one of the best works ever produced by the motion picture industry.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Filmed 90% in Mobile,AL including real homes that are still lived in today, an actual train crossing sets the stage for the first on-screen "encounter" - Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a Benchmark for innovations that appear in Sci-Fi films of Today. It actually was the first movie to test CGI, but the results were deemed not on par with what they needed. So the final effects were ground breaking in that methods were used that bring real looking convincing scenes that make you say to yourself "I think that's really there" instead of "wow, they did a great job with that effect". They easily stand up to today's CGI polish!! Truly a classic that brings out the beauty of wonder, eye bathing effects, and the deep down inside of you longing to consider the possibilities of "what's out there"!
Classic Sci-Fi Movie
This is a classic film. I remember watching it at the theater 20 years ago. It is still enjoyable to watch 20 years later. Even though some elements in the film reflect the time period it was made, the story is gripping and has a nice ending. It just shows how much the present world has advanced in the computers and technology since this movie came out.

One of the tunes on my car horn.
In 1980 I started a company in Guadalajara Mexico. The product we were selling was a musical car horn. One of the twelve tunes was the theme song from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". We has a good three year production life, then other people were smuggling car horns made in China which had many more tunes. and the Mexican economy slowed, so we shut the production down. I had also sold about 10,000 units in the US. I had several hundred parts left over and a few months ago dug them out of my attic to give and sell. some of my friends were born after the 90's and had no idea what that tune was. Now after seeing the movie, they sort of understand our tune selection.
The Word's First Introduction with On-Screen GREYS
Forgetting the fact this movie is almost 30 years old, we all must have been bowled over to realize that even the main stream movie industry had enough sense to study into and show us the first on-screen rendition of the so-called GREYS. The children Greys were very freaky and it also shows us a real lanky Grey with long arms. Thanks Hollywood. This movie was true genius and captures the excitement of actually thinking that the aliens are actually interested in contacting us now in a friendly and loving way. I'll have to give this movie a 5/5, since it is considered the best movie ever to UFO lovers all around the world. IF YOU LIKE MY REVIEWS, PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO VOTE.
