  • Harsh but accessible and hopeful

I'll admit, I've seen a number of the ultra-Mormon flicks set in Provo or Salt Lake City or thereabouts. I've even laughed at their jokes, because I understood the humor. ("The Singles Ward," for example, features a soundtrack consisting entirely of rocked-out, jazzed-out, and Muzacked-out church songs that only those familiar with current Mormon culture would recognize.) At the same time, I recognized a real and serious limitation: these movies are by Mormons and for Mormons. Things are very different with "States of Grace." This film definitely holds Mormon missionaries in a spotlight, but in a way that places them on a level with the people around them. Rather than seeing the "ideal missionaries" (which I do not believe exist,) here you'll see the real missionaries along with ...

  • God's Army 2

This is a sequel to the movie "God's Army." This movie is powerful in many ways. The story follows two mormon missionaries in L.A. One is by the book, the other can't wait to go home in one week. This movie illustrates how that one week can change so many lives. This movie is NOT a "become a mormon now!" movie. It does, however, show some insight into what some of those young men really act like. It was predictable in some ways, but caught me unawares in others. I enjoyed this movie because it showed that even in a world that is so harsh and imperfect people are out there doing their best to get through life and follow God. Many coming out of Utah today are by mormons, for mormons, and doesn't make too much sense to the rest of the world. Independent film director Richard Dutcher ...

  • States of Fall from Grace

Here is what I like about this dvd. It was promptly delivered. It was well-packaged to ensure its arrival in excellent condition. I liked the artwork on the cover of the dvd. As for the content, I have problems, to be perfectly honest. I had seen 'God's Army' and was taken by the writer/director/producer. I thought 'God's Army' presented a respectfully accurate of LDS missionary demands, challenges, struggles, failures, and triumphs. So, I had great expectations with 'God's Army 2' in view of the artistic success of 'God's Army.' In 'God's Army II, we have a pair of LDS mssionaries laboring in Venice CA. Having grown up in LA and spent time surfing South Bay, Santa Monica, Malibu, Secos, County Line, and Rincon, I know of Venice's offbeat ambience. But for LDS missionaries to rent ...

  • Religious movie

This movie was most likely produced by the Mormon Church. From that perspective, it probably accomplished what it set out to do--a statement of religious faith. Although the acting at times was not the best, this low-budget film succeeded in interweaving various stories. But from the perspective of entertaining the audience, it registered lower on the meter. It needed more editing. Some of the scenes were much too long, and could have made the same point with more compact expression.

  • Get some kleenex!

Awesome movie, I was so moved! Portrays how human we all are!! I highly recommend this movie for everyone!
