Square Enix updates a classically styled isometric RPG for 3DS in Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Players take the role of a youngster named Auster who has grown up in a sleepy little fishing village on a small, remote island. Joined by his friends Maribel and Prince Kiefer, Auster decides to explore the ancient and mysterious ruins outside of town and is led on an adventure that takes him across the island and through time itself. This version offers new artwork, improved localization, and a story summary feature.
By confronting evil and solving puzzles, the adventurers can journey to the past and discover other islands and continents that existed near the island in earlier times. Solving quests in these ancient lands lets the heroes change the course of history so that the places come to exist in their own time as well. Gamers eventually gain access to Alltrades Abbey, where they can gain access to more than 30 different vocations, each offering new looks and attributes for the characters.

Dragon Quest VII Nintendo 3DS/2DS: Fun but Painful
Are the graphics good? Yes they're great! Is the gameplay compelling? Yes, the story line is fantastic! Is it a good value? Yes, you will get hundreds of hours of play from the game? So why only three stars? 1) There is too much to keep track of. If you do not take numerous notes of locations of islands, cities, people, and treasures you will find yourself hopelessly lost in the game. The game takes place in the past, present and future, so things change... immensely. Cities rise and fall, people die, land masses change and there are a lot of them, the game scope is immense. If you don't take notes, you'll find yourself hitting apparent dead ends and going to the numerous walk-throughs available online. That takes a lot of fun out of the game. 2) Like every game made, this one too is loaded with three dimensional mazes. If that were not painful enough, you are constantly bombarded with never ending creature battles while struggling through them. Why do programmers feel challenge can only be created by drowning their games with mazes and insufferable, innumerable, and unavoidable battles? Am I sorry I purchased the game? No, but if I had watched someone playing it, I probably would not have purchased it. I personally would not recommend it. However, if the above issues are acceptable or even desirable to you, then you should purchase this game... You will love this game and it will be worth every penny.

Charming RPG game.
Like most Dragon Quest games, it's a charming story that can be played pretty casually. I like to take my time with these games so I can rack up hours. If you're looking for a more serious storyline or something that seems less like it came from a children's show, maybe this won't be for you.
