Notes
Two CD edition. Digitally remastered and expanded edition contains the 1978 album along with previously unreleased and newly restored bonus content consisting of the band's 1979 Pinkpop festival performance. This edition is housed in a deluxe edition-style digipak featuring a 5,700 word essay by Rob Bowman. Hemispheres is the sixth studio album by Rush, released in October 1978 by Anthem Records. After touring to support their previous studio release, A Farewell to Kings, which saw the group gain popularity in the UK, Rush started work on their next album. As with their previous, Hemispheres was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales and Trident Studios in London with their longtime engineer and arranger, Terry Brown. Rush continued their progressive rock sound with the side long "Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres" and the nine-minute instrumental "La Villa Strangiato".

Terrific 40th Anniversary Re-release: Hemispheres is underappreciated and underrated.

The Hemispheres studio CD is amazing throughout. I appreciate this music more than I did 40 years ago, when I first purchased it on vinyl. Better late than never, when fully realizing the greatness of this record, right? I feel like this Rush effort is the second half of 2112, the album. 2112, the song, live in Arizona is a real treat, especially for those of us familiar with the other live material on the disc, from Pink Pop in 1979. There are no dull moments on either of the 2 CDs. This is Rush throwing it down during their best era (1976-1981), in the opinion of this long time fan. The artwork, the preparation. and precision of this re-release are commendable. I have not read the liner notes, but I will say this, the liner notes inside 40th Anniversary A Farewell to Kings were ...

  • Rush Hemispheres anniversary

The treat here is the bonus disc. You can actually hear the guitar here (unlike exit stage left) Geddy still has the chipmunks on speed voice here. You will notice the differences the way they handle the same songs on exit. It starts out good and gets better, then its over, no ,then you get a smoking version of 2112. Again, very different from other recordings. If you like the early Rush you will love this. If you don't, you wont. This was before moving pictures and you will notice some things that turned up later. A must have for people who liked Rush when they still played hard rock.

  • Worth it for the 1978 live show alone, plus there's more!

Worth the reasonable price if only for the two-disc complete 1978 Hammersmith Odeon show, which had previously only been released as an incomplete single-disc bonus to Different Stages. This is easily the best quality recording of 1970s Rush, and certainly the best complete recorded performance of 2112. The mixing and mastering are tasteful, retaining the original dynamics instead of being brick-walled into oblivion. Big thanks to Terry Brown!
