This processor provides 12 computing threads over six cores as well as a four-channel integrated memory controller with a memory bandwidth of up to 51.2GB/s. This enables improved performance on the operating system and with various applications. It also offers 40 PCI Express lanes for graphic cards and other PCIe devices. Other features include Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, which work in combination to make the device a remarkably powerful processor that delivers quality performance.The six cores built into this CPU allow for powerful parallel processing, making this unit ideal for gaming, video editing, or any other computationally intensive application. Each core is engineered with a lot of thermal headroom, allowing you to overclock this unit to a maximum turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz. This high clock speed is ideal for processing large quantities of data. Since every core is dual-threaded, this processor is ideal for multitasking and has 12 available threads in total. A massive 15 MB cache further increases speed by reducing calls to memory and holding most significant data closer to the CPU itself. The Intel Core i7 3960X 3.3 GHz can support up to 64GB of DDR3 1066/1333/1600 RAM and has a maximum memory bandwidth of 51.2GB/s, allowing rapid access to data in memory. Hyper-Threading technology connects each core directly to the cache and memory, further decreasing latency. These processors are compatible with any motherboard using the Sandy Bridge LGA socket found on many Intel desktop motherboards. Four PCI-Express lanes make this CPU capable of supporting multiple graphics processing cards, which is ideal for video rendering or computationally intensive gaming. By incorporating a variety of hardware technologies and optimizations, the Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition is well-equipped to handle versatile computing environments. A 64-bit instruction set with AES extensions allows for rapid encryption and decryption as well as other cryptographic processes, like random number generation. Intel SpeedStep technology and idle states monitoring reduce power consumption while the CPU is under light load. This extends the lifetime of all computer components while reducing heat and saving energy costs. Execute Disable Bit protects the hardware from viruses and malware, and it can stop malicious code from executing or spreading across a network. Identity protection provides a built-in hardware token to verify the authenticity of any user logging in to the system, making two-step verification processes simpler and faster. By optimizing this processor for virtual environments, the manufacturer ensured the i7-3960x is well-equipped for development and other fields that require virtualization. Virtualization technology for directed I/O improves security and performance of virtual I/O devices. The Intel Core i7-3960X 3.3 GHz also makes use of extended page tables, which decreases latency and increases security when virtual machines make allocation or deallocation calls to memory. This is especially helpful for reducing security risks when connecting to virtual environments on the web.
