Thomas James, illustrated by John Tenniel. Published in 1851, with over 150 illustrations by the notable illustrator of "Alice in Wonderland" and other famous works. This is John Tenniel's first major work, profusely illustrated with a mass publication, enabling him to become recognized as a well noted English illustrator. Dark brown highly decorated embossed boards (what appears to be a spoonbill in a decorated star); 224 pages. The boards and binding are solid and tight, with rubbed corners and minor shelf-wear. The pages are crisp and clean save for some spots of foxing on a few of the pages. Previous owner's script signature on the first blank page. A solid, first edition, first printing of John Tenniel's first major work for your collection.”
