Fascinating Peek into the Spanish Inquisition
Goya is the character who much revolves about, though this story is more about the excesses of the Inquisition than it is a serious treatise on Goya's life and art. Still it is quite worthwhile, with a riveting performance by Natalie Portman.

Goya's Ghosts is probably one of the best films about artists. Milos Forman begins the film by bringing the artist's work to the forefront. He presents a truly credible vision of an artist without any bogus creative angst or romantic yearning. Stellan Skarsgard is truly wonderful as Goya, the antihero. Napoleon's brother Joseph, the appointed King of Spain gives one the funniest critiques of art on film since French and Saunders. Forman creates a fabulous visual depiction of the period that references the paintings of the time. Javier Bardem gives a fantastic performance as he plumbs the depths of awfulness while at the same time cheerfully showing us the choices that survivors of chaotic times often make. Natalie Portman gives an the best performance of her career to date. The conclusion of the film moves from the terrible to the magic. Be sure and stay tuned through the end titles to see a collection of Goya's paintings.
I wasn't able to buy it because the distributor didn't have it available after all voiding out my bid. However, I did wind up renting it at Hollywood Video and loved the movie. The sad thing is it is based on a true story. The fact people were treated like this is absolutely ridiculous. Especially under the name of God. It still, unfortunately, goes on to this day. The religious hipocracy was brillianty displayed! Good movie. Highly recommend.
This movie had some interesting paybacks to the main character who ruthlessly took advantage of a young girl who had been falsely accused of heresy by the Spanish Inquisition. Sad but true, too many innocents were imprisoned , tortured and even murdered by this group of evil clergy. Colorful settings and wonderful twists of fate. I loved Goya's Ghost.. This artist was relentless. Brenda Baril
