Explores the nature of temptation
NEEDFUL THINGS made me see the nature of evil, Satan, & temptation in a way that eight years of Catholic school didn't. Pay close attention to the film...Leland Gaunt (the Satan figure) does not come to town and do terrible things to good people; nor does he force good people to commit atrocious acts. He uses people's greed as a tool to tempt them to do bad things that, deep down, they want to do anyway. Sheriff Pangborn is immune to Gaunt's influence, not because Pangborn has magic powers, but because deep down Pangborn cares for the town and its people. He does not want to commit vandalism, get revenge, or kill anyone. Gaunt therefore cannot tempt Pangborn; Gaunt can only tempt people who are already sinning in their souls. In a way, Gaunt merely exposes their true personalities; he does not turn saints into sinners. In a strange way, it's a rather comforting take on the devil: he can only possess you if you're willing. Most of the horror in this film is psychological, except for a brutal knife fight and an innocent dog that dies in a grisly manner. Worth watching.
Classic Stephen King!
This is a classic Stephen King movie! I love the Stephen King movies and books because of the fact that the author writes these based on his own childhood fears. It really tells you a lot about what this author went through as a child. We all had our own childhood demons and it's kind of fun when we can identify with what Stephen King feared. Needful Things reminds us what we were willing to give up or do in order to obtain those most desired things we wanted as children and even as adults!
Stephen King's Needful Things
I watched this the same day as receiving. I was so glad to add this to my Stephen King DVD collection. This movie has a lot of action in it as well as the drama that others demand. This would be a perfect date movie, there's something for both in it. The storyline is slow in some spots but in most, it's very fast. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and wonder what the next step has in store. This is an all-time Stephen King classic. You will wonder why someone could sell their sole and do just about anything for material items. I have been to Bangor, Maine, home of Stephen King, there is a store there called, "Needful Things". They only take cash and credit cards.
