About this product

Product Information

Richard Mayhew is a plain man with a good heart -- and an ordinary life that is changed forever on a day he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. From that moment forward he is propelled into a world he never dreamed existed -- a dark subculture flourish in abandoned subway stations and sewer tunnels below the city -- a world far stranger and more dangerous than the only one he has ever known...Richard Mayhew is a young businessman with a good heart and a dull job. When he stops one day to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk, his life is forever altered, for he finds himself propelled into an alternate reality that exists in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations below the city. He has fallen through the cracks of reality and has landed somewhere different, somewhere that is Neverwhere.

The book condition is deplorable. It’s not the torn cover and pages I am referring to. It looks and smells nasty. Perhaps it got damp at some point. Worn and used is one thing. I had to disinfect my hands after handling it.

    Great Gaiman

This is one of my favorite Gaiman books. If you're into a dark, gothic, fantasy fairy tale than this is for you. If trying to describe it for some, I'd say it's a mix of Stranger Things (Netflix show) & Bloodborne (video game). A dark city under London full of creatures & certain dangers. It's a must read and a great start if you're interested in starting a Gaiman collection.

  • Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

This was my first experience of Gaiman. I was left a little disappointed, as I felt the story had as much substance as perhaps a Xanth novel--which is fine, considering they are indeed fairy tales of a modern sort. I have not a lot of knowledge of London. I'm sure if I were familiar with all of the landmarks in the book, I would no doubt feel it contained a more real world. I liked that there were bits of history thrown in the story, and upon completion, I will say that there is a some "real" magic here. The bits about Atlantis were quite neat, and the idea of another world--the underworld--in which the inhabitants are also subject to physical death was quite Roman (i.e. Greek). Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, along with the marquis de Carabas (all followers of the left hand path) were really ...

  • Neverwhere

A very descriptive account detailing the consequences of an ill-fated good Samaritan act. I enjoy books such as the Relic, Thunderhead, the Ice Limit, and others that mix a good dose of realistic events or plausible science with fiction. This was a little different than the Preston-Child books I enjoy for the fact that it delved into quite a bit of fantasy with its characters and places. The author is very descriptive of the events that transpire in the book, bringing to light the gritty aspects of underground London that make you wonder just what might lurk beneath the city streets. A definite easy read, but one that leaves a lasting impression!

  • One of the greatest modern authors

Like many of his works, Neil Gaiman transports his readers to realm of pure imagination in Neverwhere.

  • Bizarre, but dull as well.

I had high hopes for this book. I'd heard Neil Gaiman was an interesting writer...and he IS imaginative. He's technically a GOOD writer, too. Thing is, for me, anyway, the book was just too bizarre. In order to take a literary trip down the rabbit hole, I have to at least care a little bit about the characters I follow down it. I didn't. They weren't interesting to me or relatable. I found the overall assortment of characters to be too twisted and disgusting to engage with, and the world they inhabited was too dismal. And frankly, the book as a whole was just too dull, as well. I am sure for some this book would be a mind opening romp. Just not so much for me.
