An imperfect tool that represents a great value!
This is a "take the good with bad" kind of tool. First, the build quality is very good from a materials perspective. It's a good heavy, well constructed tool. From a machining perspective though, it looks like it was machined by an 8th grade shop class that didn't teach machining. The engineering or design is also lacking. For example, when you tighten the blade down onto the table, it tightens against the slide so it's very hard to slide smoothly. So you need to put a spacer under the blade, which allow flexing on larger blades. Also, when you rotate the blade to another tooth, the tightening knob either loosens or tightens up depending on which way you're rotating the blade. Not insurmountable problems but just bad design choices. Ok, that said... is it a good sharpener? I've ... This is a "take the good with bad" kind of tool. Not insurmountable problems but just bad design choices. Ok, that said... is it a good sharpener? I've got a cold cut metal cutting chop saw and the blades can be anywhere from $100 to over $300 and they can go bad in a matter of minutes! I had one chinese blade that did exactly that. Not just dull, not just busted teeth but entire chunks of the carbide tooth and the tooth mount missing from the blade. I just threw it out. Then I figured "this'll be a good test of the sharpener". It was the first blade I sharpened and it took some figuring to get all the angles set up right. That's another problem with this tool actually; it can be very hard to get all the angles set up and just when you think you have it, the blade feeds into the disk at a weird angel... but, I got it set up and had a go at it. It took about half an hour (water everywhere) but I got it done and threw it on the saw. Cut like brand new! I managed to put a better edge on that blade than it came with and that's with all the set up peculiarities with this machine. If I only get one sharpening out each blade I'll save hundreds of dollars and if I can sharpen all the old blades I've got, this machine has already paid for itself. This might be one of the best purchases I've made but like I said... you take the good with the bad. Accept the PIA angle set up, the poor machined surfaces and the lack of precision and you get a tool that will save you a ton of money, add loads of convenience to your shop and all your neighbors will think you've got the best shop in town at one heck of cheap price! Not a perfect tool, but a great value.
