Basic camera, but good photography for the buck.
Pretty basic camera. Nice picture quality, easy to use, ideal for the amateur photographer. I used to own an Olympus 500 E-Volt, which I really enjoyed (I gave it away to my daughter after I upgraded to a Nikon D7000). I enjoyed it so much in fact that I decided to buy a used one for myself again (In spite of owning a Nikon D7000). I bought the E-5oo by mistake, thinking I was ordering the 500 E-Volt. I was a little disappointed as the E-500 is smaller and therefore a little harder to handle (as far as I am concerned anyway. Some people like smaller cameras, I like the larger ones, a little heavier and with a better grip and better feel. Makes for faster and more stable handling). But the photographic results are similar: good picture resolution and excellent color reproduction (very ... Pretty basic camera. And interchangeable lenses for Olympus cameras are relatively cheap.

Good, solid camera
This is a great way to upgrade from the standard "point and shoot" cookie cutter cameras that are mass marketed. Having an auto focus helps dramatically until you can get in for lessons to be able to decypher the many terms and functions. Manufacturer has a free software download and good support for the Olympus line. The only downside I can find at this time is that it isn't the most popular brand and therefore used lenses can be difficult to find outside of ebay. Ultimately, you may not make a fortune taking pictures for National Geographic, but it will take you to the next level in your photography without requiring a second mortgage for the equipment. This is my first digital slr camera and I love it!!!!!!! I did a lot of research on these prior to deciding which one to purchase, and I am so glad I got this camera! It is easy to use, and if you aren't very tech savy, it is still easy to use! If I had to say anything I dislike about this camera is that you need to have a telephoto lens and macro lens for close ups, but for the quality of pictures it produces, it is well worth the investment. There are so many scene options, you can choose auto functions, which is great, or as you become more adapted to the camera, you can choose to have manual selections, its great! The flash is good, and I love how it comes ready to go, just make sure you have a media card-but it has to be CF or xd it will not take sd cards. There is not an ... There is not an image stabilizer, but with a little practice you can take great photos without relying on the image stabilization feature that soe cameras hvae. Also this camera is a little less expensive than say the canon rebel, but after researching the options, the olympus is a great choice!!!! The software that comes with the camera is oretty basic, and I really like paint.net for all of the options it has, and would reccomend that website to anyone with an slr camera. But all things considered this is a great camera for the first time slr purchase producing many options and high quality photos.
