Gears of War game engine
I remember playing Unreal 2 for the PC and never really got into the Tournament series. This game is fast paced and fun. Gears of War for the Xbox 360 and Turok have both used this beautiful game engine and yet the original is in every way as good. I am giving it a four of five rating for my only gripe, which is that it doesn't have a split screen multiplayer mode. The developers opted for an online multiplayer mode instead. If you can find this game for around $20, do yourself a favor. It is also playable with a keyboard and mouse on the PS3 if you prefer that game control.
UT3 is Vehicular Manslaughter, Mega Kill, Godlike!!!
The only reason I gave this game a chance was because I remember playing ut99 almost a decade ago and the experience was great! Now ut3 is to me what it should be. Fast action, good weapon selection, great mod community, and the maps are too unreal! Sure there was a few problems with the game at the release date but thanks to the patches released and the newest one The Titan Patch have fixed and improved on the game more. Not to mention the upcoming patches even bigger than the last. To me it gave this game a super boost. I really recommend this first person shooter game for those who want something less real and more unreal.
Unreal Tournament III: Playstation's Halo
After researching for a good first-person shooter, I decided on UT3, mainly because you can find it retail for $20, as opposed to $60 for Call of Duty, Resistance, etc. I've got to admit, it was worth every single penny. The gameplay is set up just like Halo; with an arena-type setting and a couple game modes (my personal favorite being either warfare or capture the flag w/ vehicles), and there is a vast array of weapons to be utilized; everything from a light pistol to a mini-nuke launcher, and some very unique ones such as a flak gun which shoots multiple projectiles out like a shotgun. Even your average weapons that are generic in every shooter have a unique twist to them. For example, the rocket launcher is a tri-barrel, allowing rockets to be fired at a rapid rate. On top of all that, every weapon has a secondary firing mode too. Since the rocket launcher has 3 barrels, you can load up each one and launch 3 rockets at a time, either in a tight spiral, or in a spread, or they can be lobbed over walls like grenades. The flak cannon can also use it's secondary fire to launch a large projectile that, when it hits the ground, shatters, sending shrapnel everywhere. You'll never get tired of playing with this wide arsenal. Next, the vehicles. The vehicles are very smooth and easy to use. Even if it's your first time playing, you'll be able to hop into the nearest Goliath tank and rule the battlefield. They also offer 3 different control options for vehicles, so you can find the perfect control for your liking. Just wait until you get into the later levels and a leviathan is at your disposal. If you can get your crew to pile into each position, it's practically undefeatable. The single player campaign is relatively short, and it's not really built well, but that's beside the point. This game is definitely a multiplayer focused game; the single player is just something to hone your skills before you get owned by the UT3 maniacs online. The multiplayer though, is highly tuned and very smooth. Basically, if you're looking for a single player shooter, you're probably looking for something like Far Cry 2. This game is very multiplayer oreiented. Finally, i'll tell you my dislikes about the game, which are very very few. Number one: the menues are kinda tedius and clunky, but it's nothing you can't work around. And number two: no off-line multiplayer! That is the one thing that Halo has on UT3. I've played both games, and if UT3 had off-line multiplayer, it would be better than Halo in my opinion; although Halo would easily be number two. Fun multiplayer, intense gameplay, usable vehicles, and a wide arsenal of weaponry makes this probably one of the best games i've ever played. And for 20 bucks, it's almost a steal. If UT3 had an off-line multiplayer feature, it would easily surpass Halo in my book.
Unreal Tournament III (Playstation 3)
Ok, well if you have ever played any unreal tournament game then you know how this game operates. its a fast paced, fun, unrealistic shooter. Players compete in a variety of game modes with different objectives using a multitude of weapons and vehicles (when playing in a vehicle mode you get an awesome hover board). There are many many things this game wrong, The bad: 1) It was the same as all the others and didn't do anything memorable. Sadly this is a dying series as with many others. Although its great, people don't want to keep playing revamped versions of old games 2) Sniper rifle controls are very bad because you hold down the left trigger to zoom in and once in partially you cant go in more or go out without completely exiting the scope. 3) The story line was awful. There really wasn't a story line at all! The campaign consisted of a bunch of matches with bots that weren't really fun (compared to a normal campaign mode with missions and so on) and wasn't a traditional campaign by any stretch. The conclusion: To give a complete review I'm giving a list of all the small things I may have missed The flak cannon is my favorite thing in the world. Its a very powerful shotgun that shoots, well flak i guess. The rocket launcher is amazing and easy to use. The mini-gun just looks terrific. The sniper is very very fun to use (besides the previously mentioned zoom problem) you can easily no-scope with it and getting head shots never gets old because of the enemies stunned reaction. The shock rifle, pistol (dual wieldable), link gun, long bow, bio rifle, and any other weapons i may have missed were all very good and all do something different and useful. There is also the hover board which is very cool, the teleport (in some non vehicular modes), and just the vehicles. This game did very well with balancing out vehicles in the game. None of them are super overpowered and all of them are different and have different abilities (like flying or self destruct etc.) Fortunately its also possible for players to take out these vehicles which balances out gameplay and makes it a lot better. There are many good game modes which keep you playing. The bad thing about this was that there is not a huge ps3 community which makes finding a match hard. Fortunately, there are very very very intelligent bots. They can be set to different difficulty levels ranging from very easy to extremely difficult and many in between. You can give your bots individual orders thanks to a convenient and easy to use D-pad menu such as defend, attack, follow, stay, etc. Also there are taunts which are very fun including the hip thrust. Weapon selection is innovative and very good. Finally I would recommend this to EVERYONE that enjoys shooters and hopefully this game will make a come back and the series will return and thrive. Rate 5/10
Great multiplayer shooter
not really a great story line but awesome if you can play online or have atleast 4 people you can invite over to play. The bots are a good if you're lonely and have no one else to play with and they are really challenging when difficulty is set to godlike. I can only manage to a 1:1 kill death ratio. The only reason it is not rated 5/5 is because the campaign mode really makes no sense and its really just so you learn the basics of the game types and the different weapons and vehicles available. definitely one to have in your library especially because its so cheap.
