Here is a story of a great civilization made human, played out through the lives of four families who are divided by ethnicity but united in shaping the destiny of their land. • Russka - The evolution of Russia its customs, people and geograpy.

Edward Rutherford is a great author with an enjoyable narration style, this book follows the growth of Russia from circa 100 A.D. through the eyes of descendants of a family. I love the hardback version of this book with a map and a family tree to illuminate the settings. Great insight into the evolution of a huge land mass in our planet.

  • Russian history in a great package!

This is the only Edward Rutherfurd work I've read, and highly recommend it to those interested in Russian history. Rutherfurd definitely did his research and incorporated authentic history into his fictional characters' tales. The saga is told in four "parts", each being a segment of Russian history. Whether it was the poor little girl, trapped with her incestuous father in an isolated life or the crazed peasants who locked themselves into a church as the year 999 came to an end, convinced that it was the end of the world, all of the characters are very interesting. The author does a superb job of painting the world of long ago Russia so that I felt I was peering into the minds of these very real-feeling people. It's been more than a dozen years since I read this book; character names ...

  • DEvoted Rutherford Reader

Having been a constant Rutherford reader, have exhausted most of the offerings with this as a remaining exception. As with all this author's books - history is virtually intact with some fantastic stories and characters to make the passage of time real and understandable. This is a gifted scribe, who has been compared frequently and rightly so to a contemporary Michener.
