Sony's best-selling Ratchet & Clank series makes its PS3 debut with a return to the play mechanics and sly humor introduced in the 2001 original. Incorporating both shooting and platform jumping segments, Tools of Destruction finds Ratchet on a personal mission to stop a Lombax-loathing emperor from destroying his species. Droll sidekick Clank accompanies his feline-like friend on an action-packed trek across the cosmos. The duo will visit and explore new 3D worlds, from a prehistoric land inhabited by towering dinosaurs to a swamp-like world crawling with insects. To bring the planets to life, developer Insomniac Games created an enhanced version of the graphics engine used in Resistance: Fall of Man, the company's first PS3 game. Once again a number of inventive weapons and gadgets are available to defeat the comical creatures populating each planet. The Transmorpher temporarily changes enemies into waddling penguins with a keen fashion sense, while the Groovatron forces foes to get down and get funky. Jiggling gelatin cubes are generated with the Gelanator, which Ratchet can use to reach higher areas. Several cinematic events are woven into the action for diversity, from grinding atop twisting rails to engaging in space combat while traveling across fixed paths. Along the way players will encounter several new characters that shed light on both Ratchet and Clank's pasts. The motion-sensing Sixaxis controller is even put to use in selected areas, including weapons, moves, and puzzles. The Tornado Launcher, for example, fires a twister that can be "steered" toward a target by tilting the controller, allowing Ratchet to move independently with the analog stick. Players must also tilt to avoid objects while freefalling, to manipulate circuit panels, and to even fly with Clank's robo-wings -- one of several new abilities the little robot acquires as he progresses. While Tools of Destruction does not feature a multiplayer mode, solo players are encouraged to revisit areas to unlock bonus content and other surprises. |

Good graphics
Compelling gameplay
Good value
Great action-platformer!
Ratchet & Clank is one of the few remaining action-platform series of the modern gaming era and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is one of the series' finest entries. The massive open levels dwarf those of the earlier PlayStation 2 games. There are many fun new weapons as well as some returning favorites. And despite being released more than a decade ago the visuals are still rather impressive. A great game for longtime fans and series newbies!
Broken pirated disk
I got the game it worked just fine there were no scratches on it until I got to the second level the screen just goes black so I looked at the disk more closely and not even half the disk is written the rest is a blank cd

Great game and great fun
I was late playing this game, with so many other great games that came out I unfortunately put this one off to the side in my "will rent later" list. Boy was that a dumb move. From the fantastic visuals to the addicting gameplay you would be hard pressed to find a better platform game on ANY console right now (yes I'm talking about you Mario!). It has everything that is missing from other platform games, it has humor that adults and kids alike can enjoy. A story line that keeps you interested and wanting to progress so you can see how it unravels. Although many will find the difficulty to be a little easy the amount of fun the game provides more then makes up for it. I never play games through multiple times, usually I beat the game and find no reason to play the exact same thing over and over again. However once you beat the game it can go into "Challenge" mode, where your enemies are harder but you can upgrade your weapons further, get multipliers (up to 20x) if you can go long enough without taking any damage and a whole list of "skill points" you can get by... "Using the "Transformer" gadget to turn your enemies into penguins then throw a "Groovetron" gadget to make them dance and you can get the "Happy Feet" skill point! A game like this is a nice break from FPS, Racing games and beating hookers with baseball bats. It's also a great game for kids to play as everything is colorful and the violence is masked greatly by the "outrageous" weapons you weild. Better late then never when it comes to playing this game!
Not the best - but looks great!
Not the best of the series (that would be 3: Up Your Arsenal) - but definitely the BEST LOOKING of the bunch! The graphics are like playing a Pixar movie. Flawless and gorgeous! The game controls are perfect. The weapons were so-so. My son loves the Tornado-gun! Maybe Insomniac is running out of ideas? (I miss the whip) The sixaxis works, with the option to disengage if you want. The robo-wings are the best gadget. The storyline, while understandable, was kinda 'eh.' Not really engaging at all. The punchlines are all there. So are the innuendos. But something lacked in this game; not sure what. The gameplay is not really challenging. My son has been playing RnC since he was 4. He's now 6 and beat this game by himself TWICE already! (We first beat it 3 days after Christmas, playing an avg of 3hrs a day.) Even the 'challenge' mode wasn't too tough once you upgrade your weapons. By the time we got the RYNO - we lost interest, mainly from killing everything on the screen with one shot. Once you get all the secret bolts and plans and skill points - replayability is nil. Unless you create your own set of challenges. Highly anticipated, but wasn't really impressed. Being the first RnC entry for the PS3, this game could have easily been a PS2 game. But Ratchet and Clank series is still heads above the rest so still a good buy at PS2 prices ($40-$45). PROS: Overall great game series. Gorgeous graphics. Great characters. Fun to play (the first time around). Great 3-D environment. Funny moments. CONS: Too easy to beat. Very short. Storyline was so-so. Could've done more with the PS3.
A Ratchet and Clank game. Nothing More, nothing less. But thats good.
The first R&C on the PS3. The ones on the PS2 were amazing! I don't know of any other game series that puts that classic gaming feel into new games with such grace. This game is what those games were, but on the PS3, and thats pretty awesome. With a great story, good graphics, and another great arsenal of weapons, this is another great part of the series. If you haven't played the PS2 ones first. Then I suggest you try to, or join the many others in trying to get an HD collection for it, made...if it hasn't already been made. Point is, if you haven't played the others...play them. If you liked them...buy this. You won't be disappointed. Like all other R&C games, this one comes with great replay value. One problem I had with it....no trophies. Now don't get me wrong, there is plenty of secret stuff to grab, just like the others, and I always go out of my way to get them....just would of been nice to have something saying I did it this time.
