|Director:||Paul Verhoeven||Genre:||Sci-Fi & Fantasy|
|Peter Weller stars in this urban sci-fi Western as Murphy, a good cop who literally gets shot to pieces while on duty and winds up reborn as a crime-fighting machine. An ambitious executive (Miguel Ferrer) at OCP, the corporation running the futuristic city of Detroit, fuses Murphy's torso with bulletproof steel limbs and rewires his brain with computer chips so he will have no will of his own. Murphy's former partner (Nancy Allen) tries to help RoboCop remember his human past, but his circuitry blocks whatever dim memories remain. Luckily, a chance encounter with one of his killers wakes up the human essence in RoboCop, causing him to rebel against his programming and commence on a one-cyborg mission of vengeance that leads all the way to the top of OCP. This second English-language film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is unremittingly brutal, darkly comic, and filled with bits of clever satire and pathos. A special highlight is the hilariously incompetent ED-209, RoboCop's main rival in the department of automated law enforcement. Considered by many critics to be one of the best films of its genre, ROBOCOP was followed by several sequels and a 1994 TV series.|

Robocop (DVD, 2001)
Provocative film about a cop who literally gets shot to bits by a gang of criminals. Somehow he is still alive, and the OCP, which is the corporation running futuristic Detroit, has him rebuilt sort of like the Bionic Man years ago. This time, all new steel limbs and outer armorment with computer chips controlling his mind, he is turned into a cyber-soldier. His old partner tries to help RoboCop (as he is called) remember his human side, but isn't successful. But one day a chance encounter with one of the killers of his human side, he decides to go on a one-cyborg campaign of revenge against those who killed him. A mission that will eventually lead all the way back to OCP. . . Average movie but an interesting idea,
It's My Favorite Movie! Though not for young kids.
Without a doubt my favorite movie. The acting is phenomenal, people playing the characters fit perfectly, special effects are excellent (especially for 1987), and the story writing is amazing (won't spoil any of it for you in this review... don't worry). The clarity of the DVD isn't the best compared to modern movies, but it beats a degrading VHS tape any day. Since it is on DVD format it packs 5.1 surround sound in English, French, and Spanish. It also has subtitles for those languages which can be useful. The only special feature is the original theatrical trailer. Running time is 1 hour 43 minutes which feels just right. Just a warning to anyone looking to buy this for children... it is very violent with realistic blood and a good amount of swearing. It's an amazing buy, and you can get it extremely cheap on eBay for around $4 to $6.
Some things just get better.
The director of this movie said that he felt Robocop was like a new incarnation of Jesus. This is reinforced by some coincidental imagery. I'm not sure most people will see it that way on their own. But I do think if viewers watch with a keen eye, they will be somewhat awed by everything that comes in this package. The film runs you through the gamut of human emotions, without making it feel forced. And the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously gives it more shelf life about 20 years after it was released. Watching it as a kid, I tended to miss the social commentary spiced into the fast-moving storyline. It's not exactly a kid's movie by any means, but it's exciting enough to keep almost anyone's attention. Many films like this have been made several years later with much better technology and bigger budgets. But it's not all about the money and the technology. RoboCop is a great story and message done well for its time. That is why it deserves to be watched again and again.
This movie is the best. Half man half machine 100% badass! RoboCop changes lives. If a unicorn and a wizard had a baby and raised it only to cast one spell..that spell would turn any movie it was cast on into RoboCop. If one movie inspires more hope for the future than Obama and represents more love for the past than the Goonies, it is RoboCop. I only dislike that my TV is to small to make the actors life size. I decided to buy it because i am American and every American should own this epic tale or good over evil, revenge, and love... love for epic police brutality and manbot action.
Amazing 80's science fiction film; must-see for sci-fi fans.
Robocop is one of the pinnacle films of its time and is still just as awesome and entertaining today as it was yesterday. It tells the tale of a police officer who dies a brutal death and is resurrected to serve his manufacturer and ultimately gets tied into an intersecting plot when going vigilante to find and eliminate his killer. It masterfully blends well constructed narrative with memorable acting, an epic theme song and a fitting, sci-fi undertone. For as gruesome as the film is at certain times, Robocop demonstrates some of the major criteria for quality film entertainment and remains full of originality and memorable scenes, setting, characters and story.
