Jodi Picoult's powerful novel portrays an emotionally charged marriage that changes course in one explosive moment. For years, Jane Jones has lived in the shadow of her husband, renowned San Diego oceanographer Oliver Jones. But during an escalating argument, Jane turns on him with an alarming volatility. In anger and fear, Jane leaves with their teenage daughter, Rebecca, for a cross-country odyssey charted by letters from her brother Joley, guiding them to his Massachusetts apple farm, where surprising self-discoveries await. Now Oliver, an expert at tracking humpback whales across vast oceans, will search for his wife across a continent -- and find a new way to see the world, his family, and himself: through her eyes. | |

Disappointing
"Songs of the Humpback Whale: A Novel in Five Voices” is Jodi Picoult’s first novel, published only after she became a literary star. To me, that’s a sign that a book is flawed, and even a diehard Picoult fan may be disappointed by this novel. I certainly was. The narration rotates among the voices of five characters: Jane, Rebecca (Jane’s teenage daughter), Oliver (Jane’s husband, a whale expert), Joley, and Sam. Each narrator has his or her own font, presumably to assist the reader in differentiating among them. But there is no such assistance as the novel shifts between timelines. I tried to read this book twice, reading 70 or 80 pages only to find myself hopelessly lost and unable to tell one narrator from another before putting the book aside for another title. Life is too short of disappointing books! Is there anything to like here? Of course. Much of the book is set in Stow, MA on an apple orchard. The details about apple growing and the orchard are simply delicious.
