Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever (Book 1)
Thomas Covenant is a writer who lives at Haven Farm in a small town and he is also a leper. One day he blacks out and ends up in 'the land' where he is suddenly filled with life and his leprosy is gone. Being a practical person he cannot believe what is happening to him and while in the land he refuses to go along with anything that happens earning him the title of the Unbeliever. Book one in this series introduces us to the lead character and give you an understanding of leprosy and it's impacts on the person who suffers from it. This is a great series that deals with a fantasy land that is full of magic, intrigue and violence. Donaldson wrote this book in 1977 and it was only a moderate success at the time but it has continued to sell over the years and has become a modern classic among science fiction and fantasy readers. If you have not read this series I highly recommend it. It is a bit dark in nature and is a bit rough in its style but overall is a great book. Rated 5 of 5 for a great story that leaves you wanting more.
Lord Foul's Bane : the series- all of them
Back in the 70's and 80's I read Tolkien at least twice a year . sometimes more . I was trying to get the Elfin language and way of life understood . I never went anywhere without a book to read . I stumbled upon one of Stephen R. Donaldson books ,(which in nothing like Tolkien) in a used book store .It was called "A Man Rides Through" . I found this to be one of the best books I read in a long time . A really long time . I read both books in the series and 20 years later keep hoping there will be another . After I finished both books ( way back when) , I looked to see what else was written by Stephen R. Donaldson . I stumbled on the Lord Foul's Bane series . I found it to be very well worth the time to read it and have remembered it over the years .Mr. Donaldson is an author that knows how to write and keep you interested . You will not want to put any of his books down . (unless you are picking up the next book in the series ). I found the series for sale on E Bay . I just could not pass it up . I like to reread books and pass them off to my children or to the local veterans hospital . If you have never read this series , you should. It is different and well worth the time spent . You just might find a new favorite author .
