The most scary ghost movie in my opinion
This is the most impressive ghost/horror movie ever made. It is the 1963 original production in B/W. The new remake seems to bear no resemblance to the original movie and was lousy

After the death of her invalid mother, Nell Vance (Lili Taylor) finds herself evicted by her cold-hearted sister. When Nell receives an invitation to participate in an insomnia study from Dr. David Marrow (Liam Neeson) at Hill House she accepts. A secluded mansion in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, it also has a reputation for paranormal activity too. Here she meets the other participants, Luke Sanderson (Owen Wilson) and Theodora (Catherine Zeta-Jones), as well as the caretakers, The Dudleys. The house was built in the 1880's by a textile tycoon, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning) for his wife an future family. However all of his children were born dead and his wife too died before the mansion was completed. Cain became a total recluse. Unknown to the participants, Dr. Marrow is ... In a freak accident Marrow's assistant is slashed across the face bu a snapped clavichord wire and must leave. Theodora and Nell start experiencing strange happenings in the house. Nell starts to see apparitions like Hugh Crain's wood portrait change into a skelleton face with the words "Welcome Home Eleanor", written in blood. Of course, nobody believes her. Nell is determined to prove the place is haunted by the spirits of people victimized by Crain's cruelty. Crain was reputed to have taken children from his mills and murdered them, burned their bodies in the massive fireplace, and trapped their spirits and souls forever, providing him with an eternal family. Nell also finds out that she is decended from Crain's second wife, Caroline. After more and more terrifying events, Nell is beginning to act like she is "cracking-up". She is convinced that she can't leave without setting the souls and spirits of the eternally suffering children free. Everybody wants to leave, but Nell won't. Theodora offers Nell a place to live but when she reveals her relationship to Caroline, Hugh Crain's spirit seals up the house with all inside. The house now takes on a spirit of it's own with the sculptures and baroque woodwork coming alive from time to time. Luke is dragged by Crain's spirit to the fireplace and decapitiaed. Nell is eventually able to lead Crain's spirit toward an iron door where avenging spirits drag him down to Hell. Nell is also dragged down with him and is killedtoo, but her spirit is released and rises to Heaven with the souls of the children. In the morning after Nell's death, Theodora and Dr. Marrow wait at the locked gates waiting for the caretakers. After sunrise, the Dudleys arrive and open the gate. After asking Dr. Marrow if he found out what he wanted to know, the traumatized pair just silently walk out, leaving Hill House behind them.

Based on "The Haunting of Hill House," the book with some big storyline changes which weren't to movie advantage.
Much superior to remake starring Zeta-Jones tho I do believe they used the same room backdrops. It is a truly scary movie tho it wld have been a superior movie if the book had been followed more closely.
