2009 two CD collection from the Michigan-bred '60s rockers. This punchy quartet from Ann Arbor ruled the state during the mid-1960s with a blend of roots Garage and exciting Blue-Eyed Soul. The handful of records they cut have become totems of cool to Garage fanciers the world over. Many Rock 'N' Roll, Garage and '60s music enthusiasts are still shocked that the band did not break out on a national or international level. Hard Not to Be a Fan
If you're a fan of The Rationals or simply love garage and blue-eyed soul, this two-disc set from Big Beat will certainly satisfy. Usually covers annoy me, but "I Need You" (The Kinks*), "Gloria" (Them), and "Smokestack Lightning" (Yardbirds and many others) fit so seamlessly with The Rationals' music that the covers seem somehow appropriate. "Someday," a Rats' original which should have been a hit, is my fav on disc I, but great songs abound there, such as "Gave My Love," "Feelin' Lost," "Look What You're Doing (to Me Baby)," "I Want to Walk With You," and "Be My Girl." Even "Turn On," a commercial for a clothing store, is interesting musically, but the lyrics—well, it's a commercial. The first disc is mostly garage with a number of original songs. The covers, like "Respect," Eddie Floyd's "Knock Knock on Wood," the Knight Brothers' "Temptation's 'Bout to Get Me" and others again fit the band like a glove. The second disc is mostly soul written by outside sources with only "Ha Ha," "Sunset" and "Out in the Street" written by the band. There are no clunkers in the set though I could do without alternate versions and so on; hardcore fans will no doubt disagree. At any rate, there's no buyer's regret and I'm content to add Think Rational! to my collection. *The Rats' version of "I Need You" by the Kinks is included in the famous Nuggets box. Text.
