The Wire
As so many critics said, one of the finest shows ever presented on television. The language is raw, but it's realistic - these aren't Park Avenue people. (Now that I think of it, I know a lot of upscale people who talk the same way. :0) You'll find yourself loving the lovable characters and despising the unlovables - both police and ghetto people. This is a superb series - police lingo and ghetto dialect so realistic that glossaries can be found online. One of the few shows to exhibit the loneliness and hopelessness of abject poverty with few (legal) ways out. And one of the few shows to display the reasons some police become jaded.As so many critics said, one of the finest shows ever presented on television. One of the ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!
I am so very late to the party, but I am kind of glad, in a way, because The Wire has spoiled all other shows for me. In a word, I am OBSESSED! ;) I have been through my first viewing, online, and I am now trying to collect seasons for a second viewing with my sons. This is one show where you can definitely keep getting more out of with subsequent viewings. The writing is excellent, the acting stellar, characters you hate to love and love to hate. The Wire is NOT a feel-good story, so if you are looking for that, you do not want to watch this show. Fall in love with a character? Don't get too attached, because NO ONE is safe on the wire. This is real life, folks! From gangsters to "good and bad police," to schools, teachers, stevadores, unions, the port workers, politicians, ... I also have a suggestion for die-hard fans. There is an excellent blog I read after every single episode that really gave great insight into the characters, the writing, and the story. Learn some of the inside stories and also get clarification on parts you may have missed or not understood. I am not affiliated with this blog in any way, but it truly enhanced my viewing of The Wire, so I wanted to share. After each episode, I would Google the following: "The Wire, Season ___, episode name, AND Alan," It will lead you to the blog, "What's Alan Watching." Further, he wrote two versions of his blog: one for newbies and one for veterans, so the newbie blog has NO spoilers, and the veterans blog is great for those who have already watched the seasons. Now. Can you tell I am still a bit obsessed? :) ENJOY!!!

This is a terrific show. The action has moved from the projects in Season 1 to the docks in Season 2. A group of women turn up dead and a new police unit is formed to investigate. They know there is something funny going on with some of those shipping containers down at the docks, but how do they find out what's going on? Murder, drugs, prostitution. It's all there in Season 2. Lots of violence and bad language (hey they are drug dealers). Has many of the same characters from Season 1 plus some good performances from new characters in Season 2. Falls short of season one
The Wire Season 1 was phenomenal but season 2 falls short...it just was as interesting or fast moving...really like the character of D. Barksdale...didnt like the way his character was outed out of the series would have stayed more interesting if they would expanded upon his character...the whole shipping story wasnt interesting or great in keeping your attention...I am curious as to how season 3 will play out...currently watching season 3 and it appear to go into a whole different direction....Thank GodThe Wire Season 1 was phenomenal but season 2 falls short...it just was as interesting or fast moving...really like the character of D. The Wire (an HBO special)is the high level of writing and acting that is rarely seen on American TV anymore except sometimes with PBS productions. The actors fill out their characters, the writers give several different perspectives of people, places and events, and a real cross section of the U.S. population is shown. Finally!! The Wire was recommended to me by friends in Europe who get HBO specials as part of their programing. I bought the set of DVDs of the 2nd season to see at my leisure after renting the set of the 1st season.
