Like in a lot of fairy tales, you have to take some of the information on faith and avoid looking for plausibility or logic. But the special effects are clever, and the hero is charmingly awkward and Simu Liu gives a creditable performance. I was less taken by the acting (overacting?) of his female sidekick, the actress who for some reason thought it very clever to scramble the name of a brand of bottled water (Aqua Fina) and go by the very awkward "Awkwafina." In its essence, this is a coming of age story--with a cruel father, a mother who dies too young, and a hero who tries to find himself. The latter part of the story is saved by the always great Michelle Yeoh, and, of course, by lots of dragons--good ones and bad ones, to bring this story to a "Happy End" conclusion. Prior to this, the bad dragons cause an awful lot of killings and carnage in the village--the sight of a field of bodies may be disturbing to the younger set. Shang-Chi II is in the works, so expect a new movie next year, hopefully with more dragons. Read full review
