  • A few gems

i originally owned this album back when released in the early '70's. Back then the album was liked for the two singles and a few other songs. Recently I was listening to Paul Simon's Greatest Hits. On hearing "Mother and Child Reunion", I reminisced some of my other favorites. I am now glad I did. The center piece, Calypso style, "Mother and Child Reunion" holds strong, while other gems, as "Duncan" and "Paranoia Blues" reflect Paul Simon at his best. This CD includes an earlier version of "Duncan". It is interesting to hear the development of a song from an artists perspective. Rewording segments and overlays of instruments give an otherwise mundane record depth, while echoing the hauntingly beautiful orchestral sound of "El Condor Paso". After some 40-years, this album definitely stands the test of time and I am glad to again have in my collection.

  • Lousy re-mastering job.

Sounds good doesn't it - "re-mastered" ? It HAS to be better, right ? Not so much. Whoever engineered this CD must have done it with the tiniest, cheapest speakers in mind, such as a cheesy, little Bluetooth unit. On a decent stereo it has way too much boomy bass and the gain if so high it just sounds pretty darned awful. If you have a reasonably good stereo system, beware of this turkey and stick with the original if you can find one. Did not compare on my boombox but think even on it I might prefer the original version. I appreciate good music (and in my opinion this album is a top fifty pop album of all time) and like to hear the music as faithfully as possible and I say, "Shame on whoever engineered and produced this wasted effort. Excellent music that holds up over the decades effortlessly but a total disappointment as far as sound quality on this CD.
