I bought this game because I love horror movies and I heard this is a really scary game. It does scare me a bit, but I'm easily scared, so I can't say it's the scariest game around. With that in mind: I liked the idea of choosing the level of play - easy, medium, and hard. I chose easy and thus far, it has been fairly easy to beat the bad guys. I also am choosing to be "good" however there are two other choices based on a persons play. They can choose to be good, medium, or evil. I had a hard time with the controls, but if you are used to playing resident evil (PS1) then it should be fairly easy to learn the controls for this game. Most of the time finding your way around is easy, but there are times you can get lost trying to figure out which way to go next. The Suffering is a third-person shooter that was grossly overlooked by the masses upon it's release. Portraying a typical silent hero, you're Torque, a man alone in a prison on a haunted island, with creatures representing the various methods of throughout the island's sordid history, begin manifesting, attempting to kill you. Packed with various "moral choices," you have the option of being a hero, a villain, or largely neutral to the goings on of those you encounter throughout the game. It's packed with intense music, visceral scenes, and a ton of jump-in-fright moments in the game, the atmosphere by far is the best thing going for this game. The graphics are a little dated by today's standards, and the controls could use some work, but other than that, I highly recommend picking this up if you can find it.Read full review
I bought the game because it's got a good review from one of the game magazines. But with no high expectation due to its low/reduced retail price, I didn't care much of it until I actually played it. I played other horror games such as resident evil(most of series), silent hill(1,2,3,4), fatal frame, etc, but the game's got a different story to begin with and a somewhat different style as other games may have shown in the past. It's a 3 year old game, and I think it's still good enough to compete with other newer games out there for ps2. Overall, I recommend this game to try as I've enjoyed playing this game. Certainly, you can't beat the price.
Besides some minor scatches on the disc it work perfect on my playstation 2. I also got the case and manuel in great condition. The suffering is a great horror game, it is a more run and gun type game with some minor puzzle. it has a great story line and depending on your action in the game, determines the outcome of the game ending. One of the best features in the game, is that you can change the view of the game from first person to third person with just a press of a button. Just keep this in mind this game had a 50/50 love/hate relationship with the gamers. Those that love it just loved it, and those that hate it just hated it. To me that what make the game unique I have never seen a game that had that type of rating. the norm is, if the game is bad than most people would say its bad. I remember reading a video game magazine and reading the review, if i remember right, one person doing the review gave it a 8.25 out of a 10 which meant it was a good game to buy. But in the second opinion, some else gave it juast a 5 out of a 10, which mean to stay away from the game or if must just rent it. Two weeks ago my brother told me he had just finished playing this Survival Horror game called The Suffering, and that he had thought it was amazing. He said it's even scarier than resident evil or silent hill. He made me promise to buy it and play it. He said in his opinion the game was 10/10. Well.... With recommendations like that you would think you can't go wrong. I was planning to find it for $6 to $7 used at some point anyway and play it but after my brothers recommendations I bought it new for $19.99 + shipping and tax which came to about $26. I put the game in and saw the intro, and the game started. It seemed adequate at first. But the controls were very bad. And the camera angles were VERY bad at times (even on 3rd person view). I got motion sickness after 1 hour and had to turn it off. The next day I popped it back in and I kind of got used to the camera. And today I finished the game with the GOOD ending. I think this game is a prime example of the fact that an idea alone cannot make a good script for a game. You can't just STRETCH an idea to make a script. You have to use an idea, and then having the idea in mind come up with an actual story to interest people. So having said that I can tell you that this game seriously lacks substance. Even the idea that is stretched out is a mediocre one at best. The gameplay is not good. It is very monotonous, boring and cliche. The controls are bad, the gameplay is awful... There are many things i like about this game. One is the Gore. Gore Everywhere! Next is the monsters! I am sure you will never see monsters like this anywhere. They have such a creative feel to them, you have to appriciate the work that went into it. Another thing about it that i absolutely love is the music. Not just regular instruments...you get trash cans banging into beats, and different everyday objects creating creepy music.It is a great story that has you on the edge of your video game chair. One thing cool about this game, is that YOU get to choose the outcome in the end. There are 3 ending based on how you play the game. a good ending (if you were a "good guy") a neutral ending (if you were both good and bad) and a bad ending (if you just a brutal individual during the game) The choice is yours. I enjoyed the first Suffering outing, with all it's messed up goodness. It ranks up there with messed up video games that I have played in my many years of gameplay. When the sequel came out, I was excited to continue the disturbed saga of Torque. Unfortunately, what started off as a game full of promise became a torturous experience that I hope to soon be rid of. First, I will discuss the aspects that didn't make me want to reach for my gun and open fire on my PS2. The graphics are on par with the first game and other PS2 games that had been released at this point. The sound effects are fine as well and the voice acting is excellent as far as voice acting in video games is concerned. Well, that concludes the good, now with the rage inducing bad. One of the things that is very important in a first and/or third person shooting game is precise control. I am one of those fools who likes to take the auto aim off for added challenge and will only resort to using it under extreme situations, like unnecessarily difficult gameplay with crappy aiming. The aiming was not smooth, but more choppy causing the aiming reticule to move further than you intended. I tried adjusting the sensitivity, but it only made things worse. This is unacceptable when you are trying to make a precise shot. Instead you are reduced to aiming close to where you want to hit and spray the area with bullets. Also, the amount of ammo you have to pump into your enemies seemed to be on the much side. For some reason, I could take a creature down with 6 shots from a .45, but I would have to empty an entire 60 round clip into the same creature with the grease gun. I never understood why in video games, it takes much more ammo from a fully automatic weapon to kill someone than it does from a pistol. Along with these gameplay handicaps, the difficulty can be downright unreasonable. When you are forced to kill wave after wave of enemies you can't aim at, have to empty all your ammo into, and not have any left for the next wave, things can get to where you may need to be on blood pressure medication. Points of particular frustration are the Drowning Pool and the final battle. Oh, and to make things just that much worse, the camera sucks. There are a few things I like to pride myself when playing a video game. I like to manually aim, not resort to reading guides, and not use any cheats like God mode or replenish health or ammo. In the case of this game, I broke all those rules and I feel like less of a man because so. Even when I broke said rules, I still had my work cut out for me. When I finally watched the final cinematic and watched the credits roll, I opened my PS2, took The Suffering: The Ties That Bind disc out and put it back in its case, and promptly banished it to my gaming no man's land where it shall never be played again.Read full review
I feel that this is a true sequil to the original. The Suffering: Ties That Bind follows through with dark characters and sometimes challenging monsters to kill. At times there are onslaughts of beasts to fight wich makes the game more challenging, but extremely more fun. Much like the first, you have to make decisions to save, kill, or let the monsters kill the innocents that you will come accross in the game. Although some of the controls are different than the original and they take some time to get used to. I have to say on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = sucks and 10 = extraordinary) I would rate The Ties That Bind an 8.
Ties that Bind starts off right where the first one left ended. You follow Torque as he must fight his way through Baltimore looking for answers to his past. The cool thing is that say you finished the first one with the good ending you start the second one with the good start and the game progresses from there. The major downside to Ties that Bind is that it isn't as scary as the first one. This game is more about running and gunning and doesn't have many edge-of-your-seat moments. It also takes a lot away from the monsters that you fight meaning it seems that you are fighting more humans then the monsters. Although there are plenty new creatures in the game it just isn't enough to give this game a perfect score. Final Verdict- 4 out of 5 stars
"The Suffering" is one of the greatest survival horror games ever created. With a tough character like Torque you rarely feel so scared in the 3rd person mode but switch to 1st person and things come after you lightning fast. You have to find out what has happened in your past. Throughout the game you make choices like deciding to either help or kill people. Helping is much nicer and killing them really makes the game feel empty/lonely like a real killer should feel. The game stays creepy throughout and is about 7-9 hours in length. The story blends elements from the past like slave ships, World War II ghosts, and a mental institution. The graphics are slick and some of the best on any game. No online play is a shame but the basic premise is there and a whole lot of fun. Rent before you buy but I recommend this one to anybody who loves a good, scary game. 5/5Read full review
