I bought this second hand and it came in excellent condition. I was very impressed as to how easy it was to hold. In fact much more comfortable than a book.Reading is extremely easy also.I can adjust the print size so I can read without glasses, which makes reading in bed much more enjoyable. This is my first electronic book , it is also a bit dated now, but, for me it is all that I need. Very well made also . More than pleased with this purchase.
Well what can I say, I love my Amazon Kindle keyboard! It took me a long time to get my head around not needing to go out and buy the book (that's my favourite part!) and the lack of a book's physical 'presence', but now I am absolutely hooked. I borrowed a friend's Kindle when I went away and I bought one the next week. I have always had an insatiable hunger for books and I resisted buying the Kindle for some time because of my reservations above. Needless to say, now I've bought one, I've never looked back and have been recommending them to anyone who'll listen! I went for a keyboard version because I already have a touchscreen phone and wanted something closer to 'normal' - everything is getting a little space age! I also thought there may be less opportunity for things to go wrong if touchscreen technology wasn't involved. I have used the Kindle touch and can say with confidence that I prefer the keyboard version. It just seems more durable, more tangible somehow. Registering everything is so simple, just follow the instructions and you're set up within 5 minutes or so. The size and weight of the Kindle are great, it feels very lightweight when you're holding it. It is slightly bigger than a book but you get used to that very quickly and the way that the sets of page-turning buttons have been positioned makes it easy to hold it in a variety of ways, even on its side. Also, I have now purchased a case whereby the Kindle can stand on its own and can be set at different reading angles so no need to hold it at all if I don't want to. The battery life is unbelievable; the Kindle seems to last well over a month (and I do use it often) and a full charge takes about half an hour. I love the features of the Kindle. Firstly, as soon as you look at the screen, you will immediately note the stunning quality of the text. The liquid ink makes the experience ever so real. Secondly, the fact that you can sample books for at least 2 to 3 chapters before you choose to buy has been really useful. It's not like you can stand in the book shop that long before you hand over your well-earned dosh... you've only got the blurb and a review to go on. Thirdly, a book downloads in approx 2-3 minutes - very quick - and the Kindle can store hundreds of them. My favourite feature is the fact that the Oxford English Dictionary has already been downloaded for you by Amazon. This means that you can instantly look up any unknown words and check the definition / usage. You can also highlight passages of text and annotate it if you wish. Brilliant! I have the wi-fi and 3G version (mainly so that I could buy books on the go if I wanted to) and the connectivity is great. I can access the web on my Kindle which I've found invaluable (when my phone ran out of battery and I needed to check my emails etc). Obviously, it's slower than my laptop and smartphone but that's what I expected and it's hardly dial-up speed... Also, you can add music to your Kindle if you want some gentle background sounds whilst you read. I haven't done this yet so cannot comment but it's an interesting idea and looks to be a straightforward drag-and-drop system of file transfer. The Kindle keyboard retails on Amazon.com for approx £150 and I managed to grab one off ebay which was virtually new - just had a couple of uses, box opened etc - for £115 (including postage and packaging). Bargain!! BUY ONE TODAY! You won't regret it.Read full review
The screen technology is truly remarkable, far better than any tablet PC I have seen so far, you can read in full sunlight. It is so easy to place documents and books on the system. Setting the wifi has its limitations with high level security on some networks, but its just a case of getting the right type to match. The 3G works fine. Browser is OK to check emails but a little fiddly for replying although it can be done. To be used just to keep in touch with the outside world really and access a PC when you get the time. It does allow a look op of anything on the net should you need reference, but zooming in a little difficult. Overall a truly great piece of kit remembering just where you were, and the added ability to read your book (Very automated) should you want to carry on reading while doing something.Read full review
The Kindle is a brilliant E-book, it's good for those that want to read lots of books, or want to see a quick magazine on the go but don't want to carry them around. I would recommend spending the bit extra for the 3G because it gives more freedom whilst out and about. The experimental music option is good and will work well for some users who like to have background music as they read. The experimental browser function isn't brilliant in comparison to tablets, but it still is a lot better than I would have expected. The Kindle is easy to use at any age, but I would recommend that categories should be used to make sure that each book is easy to find! Also great for substitute audio books as there is a speaking function which reads the book to you, although the voice doesn't carry emotion or emphasis. The only problem that I seem to have is that if the Wi-Fi connection is left on then the battery goes down really quickly. But another great feature is being able to send books to your kindle through it's personal kindle email, which also gives you the option to convert PDF files into Kindle books! Overall I would definitely recommend this product to any book fan or heavy reader! Brilliant product!Read full review
I bought this as a surprise gift for my wife who is an avid bookworm! It was a bit of a high risk strategy given her passion for the 'physical'ness of a (large) book which she normally manages to consume in less than a 2 day window! Holidays are a nightmare! With a whole day to read, she can get through as many as 12 books in a 14 day period! Add to that the fact that there are 2 pairs of shoes per day and I normally have to fight to make sure I have room for my "Speedo's !!" When combined with a cover, I am told by she who must be obeyed that it is "BETTER than books themselves"! - I was recently awarded 2 (TWO !!) Brownie point - Guys if you have never ever received 2 (YES TWO!!!) Brownie points in one Millenium, then trust me - Just buy one! I decided to get the all singing / all dancing model with the hokey kokey 2000 web thingy that allows downloads books and newspapers and other stuff wherever you happen to be on a FREE weblink paid for by Amazon! As well as that, there are hundreds of books available for as little as £0.99 as well as a wide variety of FREE books in additinon to the recent release material. I am also told that the battery life FAR EXCEEDS any other battery driven toy that she owns! Believe me, that is gioidness in itself with sigificant periods of peace and quiet available for days on end!!! It is also lightweight although instead of books, the case now has a couple of articles in for ME (Yes thats right - for me!) although I gather an extra pair of Zumba (whatever that is) shoes are also now obligatory for her to pack "just in case..........."! Listen guys - bottom line is that this is the poodles privates when it comes to buying a present for her indoors AND, (whilst the 'norm' is that if she wants my opinion, she gives it to me first !!) I even heard her saying to another friend that she may have underestimated my ability to think for myself!!! High praise indeed .......... although when I thought about a 2nd glass of red wine, apparently I had 'not understood the concept correctly!!! All I want to say is if you want a GREAT present and don't have the readies for the diamnd ring and cant take the gamble on sexy underwear or what size hoof she takes (sorry!! Shoe.........) then this is as close to a surefire bet. By the way you didnt hear this from a man in the pub (or me!) OR from a female friend of yours! Just have the bottle to say you thought of it yourself and standback to be smothered in kisses! She wont believe you came up with the idea without a bit of help but once she has tried it, she wont care WHO the idea came from! Job done my friend!Read full review
