The one I own is actually my second, I returned my first one due to light scratches that were distracting when glowlight is on. That being said, THE SCREEN IS VERY FRAGILE! If you're only using the simple touch with glowlight without the glowlight option (in which case you should buy the cheaper simple touch only option...) it's not a big deal, but if there is even a tiny scratch on your screen, turning on even the lowest screen brightness on glowlight will make it extremely illuminated and distracting. For this reason, I have purchased a good case from barnes and nobles in addition to a screen protector from amazon for the nook. Everything else is fantastic. This is my first e-book experience, and the touch screen is much more receptive than I believed it'd be and there are so many options including page font, font size, margin size. The epub compatibility is amazing and I have found many ebooks for free online. You can also customize the wallpaper that shows when your nook is resting. I chose this over the kindle paperwhite because of the epub compatibility and the page flipping buttons. For around $50 used on ebay, the nst with glowlight is an amazing e-reader!Read full review

I love the eInk screen, saving myself from the annoying light of a backlit screen. One of the features I truly enjoy about the Nook simple touch is the ability to turn using the soft buttons (which naturally fall at your holding position). This allows me to sit at whatever angle and read uninterrupted by a finger swipe or a page turn. As the device allows me to carry many books with me without the added weight or bulk, I devour entire series with this device or always have the flexibility to change to whatever I feel like. I see no issue with this device and would buy it again.

I bought this as a present for a loved one's birthday. It arrived a few days late, since there were some aggravating complications which resulted in the shipping method being downgraded from USPS Express Int'l to First-Class. Anyhow, complaints aside - let's dig into the actual product. After reading a multitude of other reviews on eBook readers, I decided to purchase the Nook - and I am not in the least disappointed! It is the first eReader in the industry to have the Glowlight feature - something that has not yet been put to an extensive test, but is still a nifty feature to have if you do a lot of nighttime reading and want to save on electricity bills. The response time and page-turning time are all very good, significantly better than my Sony PRS-T1 (which is admittedly older, but for comparison's sake please allow this). Although the range of eBook support is behind the competition, I personally believe that the PDF and ePUB format is all one could ask for - for the tech-savvy that don't buy this you can always consider rooting the device and thus unleash a wider range of format support. Furthermore, I like how the screen has an in-built anti-glare layer (which would have saved me some bad applying on my PRS-T1) and the way the text looks. As for the design - the Nook's design is pleasing to the eye and comfortable to hold and read for long periods of time; compared to the PRS-T1, however, I think the Nook falls back in terms of appearance and "style". Overall, I believe the Nook was worth every cent and is an outstanding eReader - affordable, efficient and easy to use! I highly recommend this!Read full review
I vowed to never buy a Kindle again because they cost so much money and do not replace the batteries in them anymore. And yes I even bought the kits to try replacing them myself and it is too complicated for the Kindle Fire Touchscreen. After doing much research on e readers I decided to try the Barnes and Nobel Nook with GloLight and I am very pleased with the results. You can read it both in the daylight and at night when using the GloLight feature. I was able to convert all my Kindle books to the new Nook by using one of the many free online converters. Plus I was able to find an affordable book type cover to protect my Nook at an affordable price.

I stepped on my Glo Light and needed another. As you can see I prefer the Nook. This model has an SD card slot which is a big reason why I did not go to the newer model. I have sideloaded many books to the card from other sites or you can download from B & N to the Nook or your pc. I also enjoy the ease of borrowing from my library at all hours. The process is very easy. The battery lasts for days and I read hours at a time. It is very ease to use. You can either touch the screen or press the side to turn pages. It has many features including "go find" (a certain phrase or word), "go to page", a dictionary and much more. The screen is easy on the eyes and the light is a pleasure nothing like a pc or color tablet. It can be read in full sunshine with no problems. I take it with me everywhere.Read full review

The GlowLight Nook's six-inch, 800 x 600 E Ink Pearl display is old hat for ebook readers — the new Kindles use it, last year's Nook uses it, and a host of other devices use it. The GlowLight Nook has a screen protector on top of the display, though, which makes text appear slightly softer and lower-contrast than on last year's model. I didn't notice until I held the GlowLight Nook next to last year's Nook and a Kindle, and even though all three use the same display technology the GlowLight Nook's text didn't look quite as sharp. It's a fine screen, but it's nothing remarkable anymore, and I'm starting to wish for a slightly higher-res display that renders text a little more sharply. The big change here is the GlowLight — it makes the Nook's name a serious mouthful, but it's a wonderful addition to the device. There's a new item in the main menu for toggling and adjusting the light, or you can press and hold the "n" button for about three seconds to turn it on or off. Barnes & Noble doesn't want to explain how the light works, but it's basically a set of eight LED lights at the top of the device, slotted in between bezel and display. The lights shine down onto the Nook's display, and Barnes & Noble works its patent-pending magic to spread the light uniformly over the whole screen. I wouldn't describe the light as uniform, though. It's really bright at the top, right next to the LEDs, then there's a dark stripe right below. It evens out considerably by the time it's illuminating any text, but it's still inconsistent enough to make certain lines of text look slighty darker or lighter than others. None of it really impedes the reading experience, but it's not as nice-looking as a cool, even glow would be. Still, all things considered, the light works really well. Rather than a backlit screen that seems to glare out at you, the Nook's screen really does glow a bluish white, which is both easier on your eyes and just generally a nice effect. The light's intensity is customizable, and will go from just-barely-on to blind-you-immediately levels of brightness. Reading in bed, I was able to use the Nook with the light only slightly above the minimum level, and still read comfortably. Barnes & Noble touts that the light is much less disturbing to your partner in bed, and that it'll pretty much save your marriage forever; given that I could turn up the GlowLight and use the Nook as a flashlight, I don't know how much I buy that. Still, it's far less obtrusive than using a lamp or an iPad, and that's good for you and whoever's in bed next to you.Read full review
I had an older Nook, without the full touch screen. This one is much easier to use, especially for internet access. The screen is very bright for easy reading. It's also compact, about the size of a paperback, and quite light weight.

Much better than older Nooks (this is my 6th), but too early to know about total battery life but on par for time between recharges. Screen very good, equals newest Kindle. Older models have been better than Amazon's product which lasts about a year for me. Alone among competitors it can download PDF files and resize them, a big deal for me. Smaller E-readers are easier to use than larger sizes, not to mention Fire and similar Samsung tablets.

I needed something for my daughter who was hauling around too many books for elementary school. A Tablet or Slate was too expensive for an 11 year old, and the battery life wasn't sufficient for lasting a full day at school. So it was between a Kobo, Kindle and Nook. Kindle and Nook had many great reviews but two things stood out in favor of the Nook; the epub format which eliminated our late book fees at the library and the price which was consistently cheaper than a Kindle. Now all the books she needs for school are tucked away in the Nook including dictionaries, Spanish to English dictionary, thesaurus, all her reading books, etc. The few downsides are that like with many e-ink readers - there's no backlight - so she has to read with her lights on. Easy fix as we'll simply buy a nook LED light. Also, the Nook can be particular about some of the book conversions; it's ok with some PDFs, but not with others or sometimes it doesn't show a newly converted to epub book in the Nook, but will show up in the computer as being in the Nook. For the epub books that don't show up when on the Nook, you have to convert them to PDF in order for it to be read. This isn't too big of an issue since there's a plethora of free e-book converters online. Lastly, sometimes it does get a little buggy where you'll have to hard boot it, basically turn it on and off. It's done this when my daughter was reading a PDF, and when I loaded about 500 books into a 2nd Nook my wife uses. Overall, the battery life is superb and makes up for any 1st gen Android issues, and e-book conversions are a snap online. For $80 you can buy a cheap Android 2.2 tablet with a color touch screen but with dismal battery life, but if you're looking to be able to read a book nonstop without having to plug-in for the same price, the Nook 1 is excellent.Read full review
Really good product. Supports text files as well as EPUB and PDF. Glowlight feature is simply the best innovation in e-readers by far. All other e-readers will have to have this feature now just to stay in the game, thats how good it is. The software is easy to use and quick to load pages. The touchscreen is intuitive and easy to use. It has a micro sd card slot too! It has no ads like the kindle and is much faster and easier to use than the kindle. Transferring books from PC is just a matter of drag and drop and this works on Windows and Linux too! I would highly recommend this e-reader to anyone. Even if you already have one, the glowlight feature is worth upgrading for!
