  • OK for a budget compass

The reason I purchased this compass is because it's relatively inexpensive and it has a lower profile than most, so it is less likely to catch on kelp. I wanted to evaluate it and see if it was worth buying more for use with my scuba students. Given the price, the compass does the job for occasional diving. However, there are couple of drawbacks. The first is that it's difficult to read a bearing through the side window. The numbers on the card don't line up with the window. This doesn't matter to me much as I rarely use precise bearings and, if I do need to take a bearing, I can check it by looking down from above. The second drawback is that it developed an air bubble after the first dive. All underwater compasses develop air bubbles over time as they are subjected to repeated pressurization under water. Generally, it takes at least a hundred or more dives for a bubble to develop and it takes a bunch more dives until the bubble becomes large enough to stop the card (the magnetized rotating part) from turning freely. Having a bubble appear after the first dive isn't promising but I'll have to see how long it takes to become an issue. The bottom line is this is an inexpensive basic compass -- OK for the occasional diver -- but it doesn't appear to be rugged enough to stand up to long term use. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Short n sweet.. We live on our sailboat & I needed a compass to leave in my skiff bag & the price was right ! (I checked the dive shop & this was 1/3 the price ) & It does the job !

  • Not accurate enough to navigate while diving.

There is no counter balance for the metal used to make it point North. So any out of level can make it read up to 50 degrees off In general N always point down until put on a level surface then it will read with about 20 degrees of variance.

  • Basic compass.

I don't have a fancy dive computer/console with all the bells and whistles so this was a must have. I think my first one was stolen off the boat which is a testament to it's desirability. For the money, it's worth not getting lost and I like to know where I am at all times.
